Zusammenfassung: | Environmental external effects are evidence of the inability of market prices to reflect the interdependence of economic activities undertaken within a common environment. They are an essential - not a peripheral - feature of all market economics. This essay shows how external effects are produced by the interaction of the economy with its environment, using a classical mass-balance model. No matter how efficient the market may seem to be, the use of market prices to determine depletion and pollution decisions creates more problems than it solves. Far from sharing the stable or relatively stable equilibrium properties of most economic models, the market economy is shown to be forced by its environment through a seemingly chaotic sequence of states. Reliance on the market to accommodate each change of direction merely exaggerates the general instability of the system. The 'market solution' to environmental problems is shown to generate only increasing uncertainty, a progressive myopia, and a heightened risk of conflict |

The 'market solution' to environmental problems is shown to generate only increasing uncertainty, a progressive myopia, and a heightened risk of conflict Umwelt Wirtschaftsentwicklung Economic development / Environmental aspects Technischer Fortschritt (DE-588)4059252-2 gnd rswk-swf Ökologie (DE-588)4043207-5 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4066438-7 gnd rswk-swf Mathematisches Modell (DE-588)4114528-8 gnd rswk-swf Umwelt (DE-588)4061616-2 gnd rswk-swf Marktwirtschaft (DE-588)4037653-9 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 gnd rswk-swf Umweltökonomie (DE-588)4061638-1 gnd rswk-swf Marktwirtschaft (DE-588)4037653-9 s Umwelt (DE-588)4061616-2 s Mathematisches Modell (DE-588)4114528-8 s 1\p DE-604 Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 s Ökologie (DE-588)4043207-5 s 2\p DE-604 Umweltökonomie (DE-588)4061638-1 s 3\p DE-604 Technischer Fortschritt (DE-588)4059252-2 s 4\p DE-604 Wirtschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4066438-7 s 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-02076-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-34081-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511664465 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
