Zusammenfassung: | The Rhetoric of Sensibility in Eighteenth-Century Culture explores the burgeoning eighteenth-century fascination with the human body as an eloquent, expressive object. This wide-ranging study examines the role of the body within a number of cultural arenas - particularly oratory, the theatre and the novel - and charts the efforts of projectors and reformers who sought to exploit the textual potential of the body for the public assertion of modern politeness. Paul Goring shows how diverse writers and performers including David Garrick, James Fordyce, Samuel Richardson, Sarah Fielding and Laurence Sterne were involved in the construction of new ideals of physical eloquence - bourgeois, sentimental ideals which stood in contrast to more patrician, classical bodily modes. Through innovative readings of fiction and contemporary manuals on acting and public speaking, Goring reveals the ways in which the human body was treated as an instrument for the display of sensibility and polite values |

Through innovative readings of fiction and contemporary manuals on acting and public speaking, Goring reveals the ways in which the human body was treated as an instrument for the display of sensibility and polite values Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gesellschaft Human body in literature / History / 18th century Sensitivity (Personality trait) / History / 18th century Human body / Social aspects / Great Britain English literature / 18th century / History and criticism Eighteenth century Rhetorik (DE-588)4076704-8 gnd rswk-swf Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 gnd rswk-swf Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Körpersprache (DE-588)4114248-2 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Rhetorik (DE-588)4076704-8 s Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 s Geschichte 1700-1800 z 1\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s 2\p DE-604 Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 s Körpersprache (DE-588)4114248-2 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10320-6 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-84509-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484261 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
