Zusammenfassung: | This is a study of the political theory of the Enlightenment, focusing on four leading eighteenth-century thinkers: David Hume, Adam Smith, Montesquieu and Voltaire. Dennis C. Rasmussen calls attention to the particular strand of the Enlightenment these thinkers represent, which he terms the 'pragmatic Enlightenment'. He defends this strand of Enlightenment thought against both the Enlightenment's critics and some of the more idealistic Enlightenment figures who tend to have more followers today, such as John Locke, Immanuel Kant and Jeremy Bentham. Professor Rasmussen argues that Hume, Smith, Montesquieu and Voltaire exemplify an especially attractive type of liberalism, one that is more realistic, moderate, flexible, and contextually sensitive than most other branches of this tradition |

Professor Rasmussen argues that Hume, Smith, Montesquieu and Voltaire exemplify an especially attractive type of liberalism, one that is more realistic, moderate, flexible, and contextually sensitive than most other branches of this tradition Hume, David / 1711-1776 Smith, Adam / 1723-1790 Montesquieu, Charles de Secondat / baron de / 1689-1755 Voltaire / 1694-1778 Smith, Adam 1723-1790 (DE-588)118615033 gnd rswk-swf Montesquieu, Charles Louis de Secondat de 1689-1755 (DE-588)118583670 gnd rswk-swf Voltaire 1694-1778 (DE-588)118627813 gnd rswk-swf Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 gnd rswk-swf Enlightenment Liberalism Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 gnd rswk-swf Liberalismus (DE-588)4035582-2 gnd rswk-swf Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 s Liberalismus (DE-588)4035582-2 s 1\p DE-604 Smith, Adam 1723-1790 (DE-588)118615033 p 2\p DE-604 Montesquieu, Charles Louis de Secondat de 1689-1755 (DE-588)118583670 p 3\p DE-604 Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 p 4\p DE-604 Voltaire 1694-1778 (DE-588)118627813 p 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-04500-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-62299-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781107045439 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
