Zusammenfassung: | This book is about the influence of varying theological conceptions of contingency and necessity on two versions of the mechanical philosophy in the seventeenth century. Pierre Gassendi (1592–1655) and René Descartes (1596–1650) both believed that all natural phenomena could be explained in terms of matter and motion alone. They disagreed about the details of their mechanical accounts of the world, in particular about their theories of matter and their approaches to scientific method. This book traces their differences back to theological presuppositions they inherited from the Middle Ages. Theological ideas were transformed into philosophical and scientific ideas which led to the emergence of different styles of science in the second half of the seventeenth century |

Conclusion: Theology transformed -- the emergence of styles of science This book is about the influence of varying theological conceptions of contingency and necessity on two versions of the mechanical philosophy in the seventeenth century. Theological ideas were transformed into philosophical and scientific ideas which led to the emergence of different styles of science in the second half of the seventeenth century Gassendi, Pierre / 1592-1655 Descartes, René / 1596-1650 Descartes, René 1596-1650 (DE-588)118524844 gnd rswk-swf Gassendi, Pierre 1592-1655 (DE-588)118537695 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte Gott Naturwissenschaft Philosophie God / Will / History of doctrines / 17th century Providence and government of God / History of doctrines / 17th century Contingency (Philosophy) Necessity (Philosophy) Free will and determinism / History / 17th century Science / Philosophy / History / 17th century Philosophy of nature / History / 17th century Zufall (DE-588)4068050-2 gnd rswk-swf Notwendigkeit (DE-588)4139945-6 gnd rswk-swf Naturphilosophie (DE-588)4041408-5 gnd rswk-swf Mechanik (DE-588)4038168-7 gnd rswk-swf Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 gnd rswk-swf Descartes, René 1596-1650 (DE-588)118524844 p Zufall (DE-588)4068050-2 s Notwendigkeit (DE-588)4139945-6 s Gassendi, Pierre 1592-1655 (DE-588)118537695 p 1\p DE-604 Mechanik (DE-588)4038168-7 s Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 s 2\p DE-604 Naturphilosophie (DE-588)4041408-5 s 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-46104-7 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-52492-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511529269 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
