Zusammenfassung: | In this history of the practice and theoretical underpinnings of colonial psychiatry in Africa, Jock McCulloch describes the clinical approaches of well-known European psychiatrists who worked directly with indigenous Africans, among them Frantz Fanon, J. C. Carothers and Wulf Sachs. They were a disparate group, operating independently of one another, and mostly in intellectual isolation. But despite their differences, they shared a coherent set of ideas about 'the African mind', premised on the colonial notion of African inferiority. In exploring the close association between the ideologies of settler societies and psychiatric research, this intriguing study is an attempt to explore colonial science as a system of knowledge and power |

Introduction -- 2. Psychiatry and colonial practice -- 3. Some contemporary reviews of colonial mental health systems -- 4. Towards a theory of the African mind -- 5. Theory into practice: Carothers and the politics of Mau Mau -- 6. African intelligence, sexuality and psyche -- 7. The African family and the colonial personality -- 8. The elements of orthodoxy -- 9. From psychiatry to politics -- 10. Conclusion In this history of the practice and theoretical underpinnings of colonial psychiatry in Africa, Jock McCulloch describes the clinical approaches of well-known European psychiatrists who worked directly with indigenous Africans, among them Frantz Fanon, J. C. Carothers and Wulf Sachs. They were a disparate group, operating independently of one another, and mostly in intellectual isolation. But despite their differences, they shared a coherent set of ideas about 'the African mind', premised on the colonial notion of African inferiority. In exploring the close association between the ideologies of settler societies and psychiatric research, this intriguing study is an attempt to explore colonial science as a system of knowledge and power Geschichte 1830-1990 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politik Psychologie Psychiatry / Political aspects / Africa / History National characteristics, African Imperialism / Psychological aspects Psychologie (DE-588)4047704-6 gnd rswk-swf Psychiatrische Versorgung (DE-588)4047677-7 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Psychiatrie (DE-588)4047667-4 gnd rswk-swf Transkulturelle Psychiatrie (DE-588)4162017-3 gnd rswk-swf Kolonie (DE-588)4031790-0 gnd rswk-swf Afrika Africa / Colonization / Psychological aspects Afrika (DE-588)4000695-5 gnd rswk-swf Afrika (DE-588)4000695-5 g Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Psychiatrie (DE-588)4047667-4 s Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 s 1\p DE-604 Kolonie (DE-588)4031790-0 s Psychiatrische Versorgung (DE-588)4047677-7 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 2\p DE-604 Transkulturelle Psychiatrie (DE-588)4162017-3 s Geschichte 1830-1990 z 3\p DE-604 Psychologie (DE-588)4047704-6 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03480-7 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-45330-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511598548 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
