Zusammenfassung: | This book is a state-wide study of Tennessee's agricultural population between 1850 and 1880. Relying upon massive samples of census data as well as plantation accounts, the author provides the first systematic comparison of the socioeconomic bases of plantation and non-plantation areas both before and immediately after the Civil War. Although the study applauds scholars' growing appreciation of southern diversity during the nineteenth century, it argues that recent scholarship both oversimplifies distinctions between Black Belt and Upcountry and exaggerates the socioeconomic heterogeneity of the South as a whole. It also challenges several largely unsubstantiated assumptions concerning the postbellum reorganisation of southern agriculture, particularly those regarding the immiseration of southern whites and the immobilization and economic repression of southern freedmen |

It also challenges several largely unsubstantiated assumptions concerning the postbellum reorganisation of southern agriculture, particularly those regarding the immiseration of southern whites and the immobilization and economic repression of southern freedmen Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1850-1880 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Landwirtschaft Sezessionskrieg (1861-1865) Wirtschaft Reconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877) / Tennessee Agriculture / Economic aspects / Tennessee / History / 19th century Plantations / Tennessee / History / 19th century Farms, Small / Tennessee / History / 19th century Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 gnd rswk-swf Bevölkerung (DE-588)4006287-9 gnd rswk-swf Landbevölkerung (DE-588)4034229-3 gnd rswk-swf Ländlicher Raum (DE-588)4034026-0 gnd rswk-swf Tennessee / Economic conditions Tennessee / Social conditions Tennessee / History / Civil War, 1861-1865 Tennessee (DE-588)4119557-7 gnd rswk-swf Tennessee (DE-588)4119557-7 g Landbevölkerung (DE-588)4034229-3 s Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 s Geschichte 1850-1880 z DE-604 Ländlicher Raum (DE-588)4034026-0 s Bevölkerung (DE-588)4006287-9 s Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-46270-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-52611-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511572401 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
