Zusammenfassung: | This, Howard D.Weinbrot's magnum opus, draws on a large range of material to chronicle the developing confidence in British national literature from the 1670s to the 1770s. Using varied biblical, classical, English, economic, French, historical, literary, philosophical, political and Scottish sources, Professor Weinbrot shows that one of the central trends of eighteenth-century Britain was the movement away from classical towards native values and models. He demonstrates for example that Dryden's Essay of Dramatick Poesy reflects nationalist aesthetics, that Pope's Rape of the Lock affirms domestic peace while rejecting Homeric violence, and that Windsor Forest sings un-Roman peaceful expansion through trade. This learned and lucidly written book offers revisionist but historically grounded interpretations of these and many other important works. It also helps to characterize the complex and varied culture in eighteenth-century Britain |

Synthesizing all the nations under heaven This, Howard D.Weinbrot's magnum opus, draws on a large range of material to chronicle the developing confidence in British national literature from the 1670s to the 1770s. It also helps to characterize the complex and varied culture in eighteenth-century Britain Macpherson, James / 1736-1796 / Ossian Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1660-1770 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1650-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Nationalismus English literature / 18th century / History and criticism English literature / Early modern, 1500-1700 / History and criticism Nationalism / Great Britain / History / 18th century Nationalism / Great Britain / History / 17th century National characteristics, British, in literature Nationalism in literature Nativism in literature Aesthetics, British Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein Motiv (DE-588)4197358-6 gnd rswk-swf Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Nationalcharakter (DE-588)4137343-1 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Great Britain / In literature Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Nationalcharakter (DE-588)4137343-1 s Geschichte 1660-1770 z 1\p DE-604 Nationalbewusstsein Motiv (DE-588)4197358-6 s 2\p DE-604 Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s Geschichte 1650-1800 z 3\p DE-604 Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03410-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-32519-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511553554 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
