Zusammenfassung: | Katherine Snyder's study explores the significance of the bachelor narrator, a prevalent but little-recognised figure in premodernist and modernist fiction by male authors, including Hawthorne, James, Conrad, Ford and Fitzgerald. Snyder demonstrates that bachelors functioned in cultural and literary discourse as threshold figures who, by crossing the shifting, permeable boundaries of bourgeois domesticity, highlighted the limits of conventional masculinity. The very marginality of the figure, Snyder argues, effects a critique of gendered norms of manhood, while the symbolic function of marriage as a means of plot resolution is also made more complex by the presence of the single man. Bachelor figures made, moreover, an ideal narrative device for male authors who themselves occupied vexed cultural positions. By attending to the gendered identities and relations at issue in these narratives, Snyder's study discloses the aesthetic and political underpinnings of the traditional canon of English and American male modernism |

Snyder Bachelors, Manhood, & the Novel, 1850–1925 Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1999 1 online resource (x, 285 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Trouble in paradise: bachelors and bourgeois domesticity Susceptibility and the single man: the constitution of the bachelor invalid Artist and a bachelor: Henry James, mastery and the life of art Way of looking on: bachelor narration in Joseph Conrad's Katherine Snyder's study explores the significance of the bachelor narrator, a prevalent but little-recognised figure in premodernist and modernist fiction by male authors, including Hawthorne, James, Conrad, Ford and Fitzgerald. By attending to the gendered identities and relations at issue in these narratives, Snyder's study discloses the aesthetic and political underpinnings of the traditional canon of English and American male modernism Conrad, Joseph / 1857-1924 / Characters / Bachelors James, Henry / 1843-1916 / Characters / Bachelors James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 gnd rswk-swf Conrad, Joseph 1857-1924 Under Western eyes (DE-588)4433054-6 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1850-1930 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1850-1925 gnd rswk-swf American fiction / Male authors / History and criticism Bachelors in literature American fiction / 19th century / History and criticism English fiction / 20th century / History and criticism English fiction / Male authors / History and criticism Masculinity in literature First person narrative Men in literature Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Erzähler Motiv (DE-588)4314533-4 gnd rswk-swf Lediger (DE-588)4167106-5 gnd rswk-swf Lediger Motiv (DE-588)4425909-8 gnd rswk-swf English-speaking countries / Intellectual life / 19th century USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Erzähler Motiv (DE-588)4314533-4 s Lediger Motiv (DE-588)4425909-8 s Geschichte 1850-1930 z 1\p DE-604 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Geschichte 1850-1925 z 2\p DE-604 Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Lediger (DE-588)4167106-5 s 3\p DE-604 James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 p 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Conrad, Joseph 1857-1924 Under Western eyes (DE-588)4433054-6 u 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10096-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-65046-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511485312 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
