Zusammenfassung: | Virginia Woolf, the Intellectual, and the Public Sphere relates Woolf's literary reviews and essays to early twentieth-century debates about the value of 'highbrow' culture, the methods of instruction in universities and adult education, and the importance of an educated public for the realization of democratic goals. By focusing on Woolf's theories and practice of reading, Melba Cuddy-Keane refutes assumptions about Woolf's modernist elitism, revealing instead a writer who was pedagogically oriented, publicly engaged and committed to the ideal of classless intellectuals working together in reciprocal exchange. Woolf emerges as a stimulating theorist of the unconscious, of dialogic reading, of historicist criticism and of value judgments, while her theoretically informed but accessible prose challenges us to reflect on academic writing today. Combining a wealth of historical detail with a penetrating analysis of Woolf's essays, this 2003 study will alter our views of Woolf, of modernism and of intellectual work |

Woolf and the theory and pedagogy of reading -- Intellectual work today Virginia Woolf, the Intellectual, and the Public Sphere relates Woolf's literary reviews and essays to early twentieth-century debates about the value of 'highbrow' culture, the methods of instruction in universities and adult education, and the importance of an educated public for the realization of democratic goals. Combining a wealth of historical detail with a penetrating analysis of Woolf's essays, this 2003 study will alter our views of Woolf, of modernism and of intellectual work Woolf, Virginia / 1882-1941 / Knowledge and learning Woolf, Virginia / 1882-1941 / Political and social views Woolf, Virginia 1882-1941 (DE-588)118635174 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1920-1940 gnd rswk-swf Erziehung Geschichte Books and reading / Great Britain / History / 20th century Education / Great Britain / History / 20th century Modernism (Literature) / Great Britain Lesen (DE-588)4035439-8 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaftliches Bewusstsein (DE-588)4020630-0 gnd rswk-swf Essay (DE-588)4015553-5 gnd rswk-swf Anglistik (DE-588)4002046-0 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Great Britain / Intellectual life / 20th century Woolf, Virginia 1882-1941 (DE-588)118635174 p Essay (DE-588)4015553-5 s Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Gesellschaftliches Bewusstsein (DE-588)4020630-0 s 1\p DE-604 Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Geschichte 1920-1940 z 2\p DE-604 Lesen (DE-588)4035439-8 s 3\p DE-604 Anglistik (DE-588)4002046-0 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03538-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-82867-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511485060 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
