Zusammenfassung: | This study examines the changes which took place in the understanding of 'religion' and 'the religions' during the Enlightenment in England, the period when the decisive break with Patristic, Medieval and Renaissance notions of religion occurred. Dr Harrison's view is that the principles of the English Enlightenment not only made a special contribution to our modern understanding of what religion is, but they pioneered, in addition, the 'scientific', or non-religious approach, to religious phenomena. During this period a crisis of authority in the Church necessitated a rational enquiry into the various forms of Christianity, and in addition, into the claims of all religions. This led to a concept of 'religion' (based on 'natural' theology) which could link together the apparently disparate religious beliefs and practices found in the empirical religions |

This led to a concept of 'religion' (based on 'natural' theology) which could link together the apparently disparate religious beliefs and practices found in the empirical religions Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1700 Geistesgeschichte 1680-1790 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1680-1790 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Religion / Study and teaching / England / History / 17th century Religion / Study and teaching / England / History / 18th century Enlightenment / England Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 gnd rswk-swf Religionsphilosophie (DE-588)4049415-9 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf England / Intellectual life / 17th century England / Intellectual life / 18th century England / Religion / 17th century England / Religion / 18th century England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Geistesgeschichte 1680-1790 z 1\p DE-604 Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 s Religionsphilosophie (DE-588)4049415-9 s 2\p DE-604 Geschichte 1680-1790 z 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-38530-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-89293-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511627972 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
