Zusammenfassung: | This book presents a study of the nature and conditions of historical knowledge, conducted through a study of the relevant theories of Hume, Hegel and Vico. It is usually thought that in order to establish historical facts, we have to have a theory of human nature to support our arguments. Hume, Hegel and Vico all subscribed to this view, and are therefore discussed in detail. Professor Pompa goes on to argue that there is in fact no way of discovering anything about human nature except through historical investigation. It is necessary therefore to find a different way of thinking about how we discover historical facts. This is done in the last chapter where, in opposition to almost all present views, it is argued that we must have a framework of inherited knowledge before we can believe in anything which results from historical enquiry |

This is done in the last chapter where, in opposition to almost all present views, it is argued that we must have a framework of inherited knowledge before we can believe in anything which results from historical enquiry Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich / 1770-1831 Hume, David / 1711-1776 Vico, Giambattista / 1668-1744 Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich 1770-1831 (DE-588)118547739 gnd rswk-swf Vico, Giambattista 1668-1744 (DE-588)118626833 gnd rswk-swf Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Philosophie History / Philosophy Philosophical anthropology Human beings Philosophische Anthropologie (DE-588)4045798-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschichtsphilosophie (DE-588)4020529-0 gnd rswk-swf Vico, Giambattista 1668-1744 (DE-588)118626833 p Philosophische Anthropologie (DE-588)4045798-9 s Geschichtsphilosophie (DE-588)4020529-0 s 1\p DE-604 Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich 1770-1831 (DE-588)118547739 p 2\p DE-604 Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 p 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-38137-6 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-89220-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511597930 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
