Zusammenfassung: | The pursuit of sexual freedom and its political, philosophical and practical implications are the themes of this wide-ranging study of restoration literature, which confronts ideological issues of sexual politics equally relevant to modern debate. The author examines the writers of the later seventeenth century in their historical context, and focuses particularly on what happens when women desire sexual freedom as well as men. In a study of the writings, notorious for their sexual candour, of the Earl of Rochester, God-haunted atheist and licensed rebel of the Restoration court, and Aphra Behn, the most prominent and most controversial woman writer of the period, the author explores some of the tensions inherent in the ideology of individual liberty as applied to the conduct of sexual relations inside and outside marriage. The works by Rochester, Aphra Behn and their contemporaries gain much of their power from the ambivalence with which they treat the competing claims of freedom and authority, rebelliousness and security, the assertion of power and the need to love |

Verfasser aut Sexual freedom in restoration literature Warren Chernaik Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1995 1 online resource (xii, 268 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Introduction: the imperfect enjoyment -- 1. Hobbes and the libertines -- 2. The tyranny of desire: sex and politics in Rochester -- 3. Absent from thee -- 4. Playing trick for trick: domestic rebellion and the female libertine -- 5. My masculine part: Aphra Behn and the androgynous imagination The pursuit of sexual freedom and its political, philosophical and practical implications are the themes of this wide-ranging study of restoration literature, which confronts ideological issues of sexual politics equally relevant to modern debate. The works by Rochester, Aphra Behn and their contemporaries gain much of their power from the ambivalence with which they treat the competing claims of freedom and authority, rebelliousness and security, the assertion of power and the need to love Behn, Aphra 1640-1689 (DE-588)118657925 gnd rswk-swf Rochester, John Wilmot of 1647-1680 (DE-588)118601636 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1660-1688 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English literature / Early modern, 1500-1700 / History and criticism Sexual freedom in literature Literature and society / England / History / 17th century Libertines in literature Liberty in literature Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Erotik Motiv (DE-588)4123157-0 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Sexualität (DE-588)4054684-6 gnd rswk-swf Libertin Motiv (DE-588)4231364-8 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Freiheit Motiv (DE-588)4125079-5 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Great Britain / History / Restoration, 1660-1688 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Erotik Motiv (DE-588)4123157-0 s Freiheit Motiv (DE-588)4125079-5 s Geschichte 1660-1688 z 1\p DE-604 Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s 2\p DE-604 Sexualität (DE-588)4054684-6 s 3\p DE-604 Libertin Motiv (DE-588)4231364-8 s 4\p DE-604 Behn, Aphra 1640-1689 (DE-588)118657925 p 5\p DE-604 Rochester, John Wilmot of 1647-1680 (DE-588)118601636 p 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-06916-8 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-46497-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511518850 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
