Zusammenfassung: | In Gender, Theatre and the Origins of Criticism, which was originally published in 2003, Marcie Frank explores the theoretical and literary legacy of John Dryden to a number of prominent women writers of the time. Frank examines the pre-eminence of gender, sexuality and the theatre in Dryden's critical texts that are predominantly rewritings of the work of his own literary precursors - Ben Jonson, Shakespeare and Milton. She proposes that Dryden develops a native literary tradition that is passed on as an inheritance to his heirs - Aphra Behn, Catharine Trotter, and Delarivier Manley - as well as their male contemporaries. Frank describes the development of criticism in the transition from a court-sponsored theatrical culture to one oriented toward a consuming public, with very different attitudes to gender and sexuality. This study also sets out to trace the historical origins of certain aspects of current criticism - the practices of paraphrase, critical self-consciousness and performativity |

spelling | Frank, Marcie 1960- Verfasser (DE-588)1053154232 aut Gender, theatre, and the origins of criticism from Dryden to Manley by Marcie Frank Gender, Theatre, & the Origins of Criticism Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2002 1 online resource (ix, 175 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) The critical stage -- "Equal to ourselves" : John Dryden's national literary history -- Staging criticism, staging Milton : John Dryden's The state of innocence -- Imitating Shakespeare : gender and criticism -- The female playwright and the city lady -- Scandals of a female nature In Gender, Theatre and the Origins of Criticism, which was originally published in 2003, Marcie Frank explores the theoretical and literary legacy of John Dryden to a number of prominent women writers of the time. This study also sets out to trace the historical origins of certain aspects of current criticism - the practices of paraphrase, critical self-consciousness and performativity Manley / Mrs / (Mary de la Rivière) / 1663-1724 / Knowledge / Literature Dryden, John / 1631-1700 / Knowledge / Literature Dryden, John / 1631-1700 / Influence Trotter, Catharine 1679-1749 (DE-588)118814974 gnd rswk-swf Dryden, John 1631-1700 (DE-588)118680897 gnd rswk-swf Manley, Mary DeLaRivière 1663-1724 (DE-588)118813781 gnd rswk-swf Behn, Aphra 1640-1689 (DE-588)118657925 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte Literatur Wissen Criticism / Great Britain / History / 18th century English literature / History and criticism / Theory, etc Criticism / Great Britain / History / 17th century English drama / History and criticism / Theory, etc Sex role in literature Sex in literature Dramatikerin (DE-588)4123077-2 gnd rswk-swf Theaterkritik (DE-588)4059714-3 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Dryden, John 1631-1700 (DE-588)118680897 p Theaterkritik (DE-588)4059714-3 s Dramatikerin (DE-588)4123077-2 s 1\p DE-604 Behn, Aphra 1640-1689 (DE-588)118657925 p Trotter, Catharine 1679-1749 (DE-588)118814974 p Manley, Mary DeLaRivière 1663-1724 (DE-588)118813781 p 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-18865-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-81810-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511483578 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
