Zusammenfassung: | In Modernism and the Celtic Revival, Gregory Castle examines the impact of anthropology on the work of Irish Revivalists such as W. B. Yeats, John M. Synge and James Joyce. Castle argues that anthropology enabled Irish Revivalists to confront and combat British imperialism, even as these Irish writers remained ambivalently dependent on the cultural and political discourses they sought to undermine. Castle shows how Irish Modernists employed textual and rhetorical strategies first developed in anthropology to translate, reassemble and edit oral and folk-cultural material. In doing so, he claims, they confronted and undermined inherited notions of identity which Ireland, often a site of ethnographic curiosity throughout the nineteenth-century, had been subject to. Drawing on a wide range of post-colonial theory, this book should be of interest to scholars in Irish studies, post-colonial studies and Modernism |

spelling | Castle, Gregory Verfasser aut Modernism and the Celtic revival Gregory Castle Modernism & the Celtic Revival Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2001 1 online resource (viii, 312 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Celtic muse: anthropology, modernism, and the Celtic Revival -- "Fair equivalents": Yeats, Revivalism, and the redemption of culture -- "Synge-On-Aran": The Aran Islands and the subject of Revivalist ethnography -- Staging ethnography: Synge's The Playboy of the Western World -- "A renegade from the ranks": Joyce's critique of Revivalism in the early fiction -- Joyce's modernism: anthropological fiction in Ulysses -- After the Revival: "Not even Main Street is Safe." In Modernism and the Celtic Revival, Gregory Castle examines the impact of anthropology on the work of Irish Revivalists such as W. Drawing on a wide range of post-colonial theory, this book should be of interest to scholars in Irish studies, post-colonial studies and Modernism Synge, John Millington 1871-1909 (DE-588)118620312 gnd rswk-swf Joyce, James 1882-1941 (DE-588)118558501 gnd rswk-swf Yeats, William Butler 1865-1939 (DE-588)118635867 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1890-1930 gnd rswk-swf English literature / Irish authors / History and criticism Modernism (Literature) / Ireland English literature / 20th century / History and criticism English literature / 19th century / History and criticism English literature / Celtic influences Literature and anthropology / Ireland Mythology, Celtic, in literature Celts in literature Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 gnd rswk-swf Irische Renaissance (DE-588)4162416-6 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Anthropologie (DE-588)4002230-4 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Irland Ireland / Civilization / 19th century Ireland / Civilization / 20th century Ireland / In literature Irland (DE-588)4027667-3 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Irland (DE-588)4027667-3 g Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 s Anthropologie (DE-588)4002230-4 s Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Geschichte 1890-1930 z 2\p DE-604 Irische Renaissance (DE-588)4162416-6 s 3\p DE-604 Synge, John Millington 1871-1909 (DE-588)118620312 p Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s 4\p DE-604 Yeats, William Butler 1865-1939 (DE-588)118635867 p 5\p DE-604 Joyce, James 1882-1941 (DE-588)118558501 p 6\p DE-604 7\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10034-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-79319-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511485015 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
