Zusammenfassung: | In The Reinvention of Love Anthony Low argues that cultural, economic and political change transformed the way poets from Sidney to Milton thought and wrote about love. Examining the interface between social, political and economic practices and individual psyches, as reflected in literary texts, Professor Low illuminates the connections between material circumstances, perceptions, and ideals. Through detailed readings of the work of Sidney, Donne, Herbert, Crashaw, Carew, and Milton, he shows how from the late sixteenth century poets struggled to replace the older Petrarchan tradition with a form of love in harmony with a changing world, and to reconcile human love and sacred devotion. Donne fled the social world; Carew made new accommodations with it; Milton revised it. For Milton, sacred love, cut off from communal norms, verges on hatred, while married love takes on the burden of assuaging loneliness in a threatening world |

spelling | Low, Anthony 1935- Verfasser aut The reinvention of love poetry, politics, and culture from Sidney to Milton Anthony Low Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1993 1 online resource (xiii, 258 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Preface -- Introduction -- Sir Philip Sidney: 'Huge desyre' -- John Donne: 'Defects of lonelinesse' -- John Donne: 'The Holy Ghost is amorous in his metaphors' -- George Herbert: 'The best love' -- Richard Crashaw: 'Love's delicious fire' -- Thomas Carew: 'Fresh invention' -- John Milton: 'Because we freely love' -- John Milton: 'Haile wedded love' -- Conclusion In The Reinvention of Love Anthony Low argues that cultural, economic and political change transformed the way poets from Sidney to Milton thought and wrote about love. For Milton, sacred love, cut off from communal norms, verges on hatred, while married love takes on the burden of assuaging loneliness in a threatening world Sidney, Philip / 1554-1586 / Criticism and interpretation Milton, John / 1608-1674 / Criticism and interpretation Milton, John 1608-1674 (DE-588)118582607 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1580-1680 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1570-1680 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English poetry / Early modern, 1500-1700 / History and criticism Love poetry, English / History and criticism Politics and literature / Great Britain / History / 16th century Politics and literature / Great Britain / History / 17th century Language and culture / England / History / 16th century Language and culture / England / History / 17th century Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Liebesdichtung (DE-588)4201733-6 gnd rswk-swf Liebeslyrik (DE-588)4114413-2 gnd rswk-swf Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Liebe Motiv (DE-588)4123655-5 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Liebesdichtung (DE-588)4201733-6 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Geschichte 1570-1680 z 1\p DE-604 Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s 2\p DE-604 Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 s Liebe Motiv (DE-588)4123655-5 s Geschichte 1580-1680 z 3\p DE-604 Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 s 4\p DE-604 Liebeslyrik (DE-588)4114413-2 s 5\p DE-604 Milton, John 1608-1674 (DE-588)118582607 p 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-07032-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-45030-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511551680 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
