Zusammenfassung: | In this innovative study, Diane Purkiss illuminates the role of gender in the English Civil War by focusing on ideas of masculinity, rather than on the role of women, which has hitherto received more attention. Historians have tended to emphasise a model of human action in the Civil War based on the idea of the human self as rational animal. Purkiss reveals the irrational ideological forces governing the way seventeenth-century writers understood the state, the monarchy, the battlefield and the epic hero in relation to contested contemporary ideas of masculinity. She analyses the writings of Marvell, Waller, Herrick and the Caroline elegists, as well as in newsbooks and pamphlets, and pays particular attention to Milton's complex responses to the dilemmas of male identity. This study will appeal to scholars of seventeenth-century literature as well as those working in intellectual history and the history of gender |

spelling | Purkiss, Diane 1961- Verfasser aut Literature, gender, and politics during the English Civil War Diane Purkiss Literature, Gender & Politics During the English Civil War Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2005 1 online resource (vi, 300 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Dismembering and remembering: the English Civil War and male identity Republican politics Opening the king's cabinet Charles I Cromwell Monsters and men Milton and monsters Matthew Hopkins and the panic about witches In this innovative study, Diane Purkiss illuminates the role of gender in the English Civil War by focusing on ideas of masculinity, rather than on the role of women, which has hitherto received more attention. This study will appeal to scholars of seventeenth-century literature as well as those working in intellectual history and the history of gender Geschichte 1640-1660 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1642-1660 gnd rswk-swf Englischer Bürgerkrieg Geschichte Masculinity in literature English literature / Early modern, 1500-1700 / History and criticism Gender identity in literature Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Mann (DE-588)4037363-0 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Englischer Bürgerkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4765534-3 gnd rswk-swf Männlichkeit Motiv (DE-588)4372433-4 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Great Britain / History / Civil War, 1642-1649 / In literature England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Mann (DE-588)4037363-0 s Geschlechterrolle (DE-588)4071776-8 s Geschichte 1640-1660 z 1\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Männlichkeit Motiv (DE-588)4372433-4 s Englischer Bürgerkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4765534-3 s Geschichte 1642-1660 z 2\p DE-604 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-15276-1 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-84137-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511483905 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
