Zusammenfassung: | Though the paradigm of modernist progression has been challenged on many fronts, Erasmus and other sixteenth-century figures are still commonly viewed as people who led the transition from a religious Middle Ages to a more godless modern era. Erasmus, Contarini and the Religious Republic of Letters, published in 2005, complicates this transition by analysing a unique realm of spiritualised scholarship that cannot fit easily into any conventional intellectual chronology. By analysing the lives, work, and correspondence of Erasmus, Thomas More, Margaret More Roper, Reginald Pole, Gasparo Contarini, and Vittoria Colonna, this book demonstrates how these Catholic men and women of letters created a distinctive kind of religious community rooted in friendship and spiritualised scholarship. By spanning the too frequently respected gap between humanist reformers in northern and southern Europe, the book uncovers a widespread, if previously less visible, network that exhibited concerns we still grapple with today |

Furey Erasmus, Contarini, & the Religious Republic of Letters Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2006 1 online resource (xiv, 255 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Introduction -- A new kind of religious life -- Creating an alternative community -- The spirited quest -- Necessary relationships -- Defining the ideal -- Epilogue Though the paradigm of modernist progression has been challenged on many fronts, Erasmus and other sixteenth-century figures are still commonly viewed as people who led the transition from a religious Middle Ages to a more godless modern era. By spanning the too frequently respected gap between humanist reformers in northern and southern Europe, the book uncovers a widespread, if previously less visible, network that exhibited concerns we still grapple with today Erasmus, Desiderius / -1536 Contarini, Gasparo / 1483-1542 Erasmus, Desiderius 1466-1536 (DE-588)118530666 gnd rswk-swf Michelangelo Buonarroti 1475-1564 (DE-588)118582143 gnd rswk-swf More, Thomas 1478-1535 (DE-588)118641158 gnd rswk-swf Pole, Reginald 1500-1558 (DE-588)11859544X gnd rswk-swf Contarini, Gasparo 1483-1542 (DE-588)118996193 gnd rswk-swf Katholische Kirche Catholic Church / History / 16th century Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1500-1600 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1510-1540 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Catholics / Intellectual life Catholic learning and scholarship Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 gnd rswk-swf Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Europa Europe / Intellectual life Erasmus, Desiderius 1466-1536 (DE-588)118530666 p Contarini, Gasparo 1483-1542 (DE-588)118996193 p More, Thomas 1478-1535 (DE-588)118641158 p Pole, Reginald 1500-1558 (DE-588)11859544X p 1\p DE-604 Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 s Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Geschichte 1510-1540 z 2\p DE-604 Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 b Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Geschichte 1500-1600 z 3\p DE-604 Michelangelo Buonarroti 1475-1564 (DE-588)118582143 p 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10343-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-84987-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511550515 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
