Zusammenfassung: | While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind. Paul Crook reconstructs the influential discourse of 'peace biology', whose liberal vision was of a basically free humanity, not fettered by iron laws of biological necessity or governed by violent genes. By exploring a gamut of Darwinian readings of history and war, mainly in the English-speaking world to 1919, this study throws new light upon militarism, peace movements, the origins of World War I and British social thought |

The Darwinian legacy.--2. The age of Spencer and Huxley.--3. Crisis in the west: the pre-war generation and the new biology.-- 4. 'The natural decline of warfare': anti-war evolutionism prior to 1914.--5. The first owrld war: man the fighting animal.--6. The survival of peace biology.--7. Naturalistic fallacies and noble ends.--8. Conclusion While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. By exploring a gamut of Darwinian readings of history and war, mainly in the English-speaking world to 1919, this study throws new light upon militarism, peace movements, the origins of World War I and British social thought Darwin, Charles / 1809-1882 / Influence Darwin, Charles 1809-1882 On the origin of species by means of natural selection (DE-588)4303201-1 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1859-1918 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Psychologie Weltkrieg (1914-1918) Aggressiveness / History Social Darwinism / History Biopolitics / History World War, 1914-1918 / Causes War / Psychological aspects / History Peace / Psychological aspects / History Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Soziobiologie (DE-588)4069490-2 gnd rswk-swf Theorie (DE-588)4059787-8 gnd rswk-swf Sozialdarwinismus (DE-588)4181912-3 gnd rswk-swf Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 gnd rswk-swf Darwinismus (DE-588)4011097-7 gnd rswk-swf Biologie (DE-588)4006851-1 gnd rswk-swf Friede (DE-588)4071465-2 gnd rswk-swf Darwinismus (DE-588)4011097-7 s Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s DE-604 Krieg (DE-588)4033114-3 s Theorie (DE-588)4059787-8 s Geschichte 1859-1918 z Sozialdarwinismus (DE-588)4181912-3 s DE-188 Soziobiologie (DE-588)4069490-2 s Darwin, Charles 1809-1882 On the origin of species by means of natural selection (DE-588)4303201-1 u Friede (DE-588)4071465-2 s Biologie (DE-588)4006851-1 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-521-44465-1 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-521-46645-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511521348 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
