Zusammenfassung: | In Modernist Fiction, Cosmopolitanism and the Politics of Community, first published in 2001, Jessica Berman argues that the fiction of Henry James, Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf and Gertrude Stein engages directly with early twentieth-century transformations of community and cosmopolitanism. Although these modernist writers develop radically different models for social organization, their writings return again and again to issues of commonality, shared voice, and exchange of experience, particularly in relation to dominant discourses of gender and nationality. The writings of James, Proust, Woolf and Stein, she argues, not only inscribe early twentieth-century anxieties about race, ethnicity, nationality and gender, but confront them with demands for modern, cosmopolitan versions of community. This study seeks to revise theories of community and cosmopolitanism in light of their construction in narrative, and in particular it seeks to reveal the ways that modernist fiction can provide meaningful alternative models of community |

This study seeks to revise theories of community and cosmopolitanism in light of their construction in narrative, and in particular it seeks to reveal the ways that modernist fiction can provide Although these modernist writers develop radically different models for social organization, their writings return again and again to issues of commonality, shared voice, and exchange of experience, particularly in relation to dominant discourses of gender and nationality. The writings of James, Proust, Woolf and Stein, she argues, not only inscribe early twentieth-century anxieties about race, ethnicity, nationality and gender, but confront them with demands for modern, cosmopolitan versions of community. This study seeks to revise theories of community and cosmopolitanism in light of their construction in narrative, and in particular it seeks to reveal the ways that modernist fiction can provide meaningful alternative models of community James, Henry / 1843-1916 / Political and social views Proust, Marcel / 1871-1922 / Political and social views Woolf, Virginia / 1882-1941 / Political and social views Stein, Gertrude / 1874-1946 / Political and social views Stein, Gertrude 1874-1946 (DE-588)118617257 gnd rswk-swf Proust, Marcel 1871-1922 À la recherche du temps perdu (DE-588)4006834-1 gnd rswk-swf James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 gnd rswk-swf Woolf, Virginia 1882-1941 (DE-588)118635174 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1890-1940 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte American fiction / 20th century / History and criticism Modernism (Literature) / United States Politics and literature / History / 20th century Literature and society / History / 20th century Community life in literature Cosmopolitanism Weltbürgertum Motiv (DE-588)4620206-7 gnd rswk-swf Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Gemeinschaft (DE-588)4020015-2 gnd rswk-swf Soziologie (DE-588)4077624-4 gnd rswk-swf Weltbürgertum (DE-588)4189574-5 gnd rswk-swf Prosa (DE-588)4047497-5 gnd rswk-swf Gemeinschaft Motiv (DE-588)4208516-0 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Prosa (DE-588)4047497-5 s Weltbürgertum (DE-588)4189574-5 s Gemeinschaft (DE-588)4020015-2 s Soziologie (DE-588)4077624-4 s 1\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Weltbürgertum Motiv (DE-588)4620206-7 s Gemeinschaft Motiv (DE-588)4208516-0 s Geschichte 1890-1940 z 2\p DE-604 James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 p 3\p DE-604 Woolf, Virginia 1882-1941 (DE-588)118635174 p 4\p DE-604 Stein, Gertrude 1874-1946 (DE-588)118617257 p 5\p DE-604 Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s 6\p DE-604 Proust, Marcel 1871-1922 À la recherche du temps perdu (DE-588)4006834-1 u 7\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03299-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-80589-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511485008 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
