Zusammenfassung: | This is the first full-length study of religion in the fiction of the Brontës. Drawing on extensive knowledge of the Anglican church in the nineteenth century, Marianne Thormählen shows how the Brontës' familiarity with the contemporary debates on doctrinal, ethical and ecclesiastical issues informs their novels. Divided into four parts, the book examines denominations, doctrines, ethics and clerics in the work of the Brontës. The analyses of the novels clarify the constant interplay of human and Divine love in the development of the novels. While demonstrating that the Brontës' fiction usually reflects the basic tenets of Evangelical Anglicanism, the book emphasises the characteristic spiritual freedom and audacity of the Brontës. Lucid and vigorously written, it will open up new perspectives for Brontë specialists and enthusiasts alike on a fundamental aspect of the novels greatly neglected in recent decades |

Lucid and vigorously written, it will open up new perspectives for Brontë specialists and enthusiasts alike on a fundamental aspect of the novels greatly neglected in recent decades Brontë, Charlotte / 1816-1855 / Religion Brontë, Emily / 1818-1848 / Religion Brontë, Anne / 1820-1849 / Religion Brontë, Charlotte 1816-1855 (DE-588)118638009 gnd rswk-swf Brontë, Emily 1818-1848 (DE-588)118638017 gnd rswk-swf Brontë, Anne 1820-1849 (DE-588)118637991 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte Christianity and literature / England / History / 19th century English fiction / Women authors / History and criticism English fiction / 19th century / History and criticism Women and literature / England / History / 19th century Christian fiction, English / History and criticism Theology in literature Clergy in literature Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Religion Motiv (DE-588)4207560-9 gnd rswk-swf Brontë, Emily 1818-1848 (DE-588)118638017 p Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s 1\p DE-604 Brontë, Anne 1820-1849 (DE-588)118637991 p 2\p DE-604 Brontë, Charlotte 1816-1855 (DE-588)118638009 p 3\p DE-604 Religion Motiv (DE-588)4207560-9 s 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-60457-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-66155-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484957 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
