Zusammenfassung: | The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel, first published in 2000, brings together two traditionally antagonistic fields, book history and narrative theory, to challenge established theories of 'the rise of the novel'. Leah Price shows that far from leveling class or gender distinctions, as has long been claimed, the novel has consistently located them within its own audience. Shedding new light on Richardson and Radcliffe, Scott and George Eliot, this book asks why the epistolary novel disappeared, how the book review emerged, why eighteenth-century abridgers designed their books for women while Victorian publishers marketed them to men, and how editors' reproduction of old texts has shaped authors' production of new ones. This innovative study will change the way we think not just about the history of reading, but about the genealogy of the canon wars, the future of intellectual property, and the role that anthologies play in our own classrooms |

This innovative study will change the way we think not just about the history of reading, but about the genealogy of the canon wars, the future of intellectual property, and the role that anthologies play in our own classrooms Richardson, Samuel / 1689-1761 / Criticism and interpretation Eliot, George / 1819-1880 / Criticism and interpretation Richardson, Samuel 1689-1761 (DE-588)118600346 gnd rswk-swf Eliot, George 1819-1880 (DE-588)118529846 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1740-1880 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English fiction / 18th century / History and criticism English fiction / 19th century / History and criticism Literary form / History / 18th century Literary form / History / 19th century Anthologies / Editing Anthologie (DE-588)4002214-6 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Anthologie (DE-588)4002214-6 s Geschichte 1740-1880 z 1\p DE-604 Eliot, George 1819-1880 (DE-588)118529846 p 2\p DE-604 Richardson, Samuel 1689-1761 (DE-588)118600346 p 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-53939-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-78208-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484445 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
