Zusammenfassung: | Of all the different types of civil war, disputes over self-determination are the most likely to escalate into war and resist compromise settlement. Reputation and Civil War argues that this low rate of negotiation is the result of reputation building, in which governments refuse to negotiate with early challengers in order to discourage others from making more costly demands in the future. Jakarta's wars against East Timor and Aceh, for example, were not designed to maintain sovereignty but to signal to Indonesia's other minorities that secession would be costly. Employing data from three different sources - laboratory experiments on undergraduates, statistical analysis of data on self-determination movements, and qualitative analyses of recent history in Indonesia and the Philippines - Barbara F. Walter provides some of the first systematic evidence that reputation strongly influences behavior, particularly between governments and ethnic minorities fighting over territory |

Walter Reputation & Civil War Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2009 1 online resource (xiv, 255 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Introduction -- Reputation building and self-determination movements -- An experimental study of reputation building and deterrence (co-authored with Dustin Tingley) -- Government responses to self-determination movements -- Ethnic groups and the decision to seek self-determination -- Indonesia : many ethnic groups, few demands -- The Philippines : few ethnic groups, many demands -- Reputation building and deterrence in civil wars Of all the different types of civil war, disputes over self-determination are the most likely to escalate into war and resist compromise settlement. Walter provides some of the first systematic evidence that reputation strongly influences behavior, particularly between governments and ethnic minorities fighting over territory Geschichte 1940-2000 gnd rswk-swf Civil war Insurgency Autonomy and independence movements Political violence Gewalt (DE-588)4020832-1 gnd rswk-swf Kriegsgefahr (DE-588)4137620-1 gnd rswk-swf Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4008784-0 gnd rswk-swf Nationale Minderheit (DE-588)4039409-8 gnd rswk-swf Innerstaatlicher Konflikt (DE-588)7619747-5 gnd rswk-swf Eskalation (DE-588)4153029-9 gnd rswk-swf Unruhen (DE-588)4136263-9 gnd rswk-swf Separatismus (DE-588)4054573-8 gnd rswk-swf Autonomiebewegung (DE-588)4131751-8 gnd rswk-swf Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4008784-0 s Autonomiebewegung (DE-588)4131751-8 s Gewalt (DE-588)4020832-1 s Unruhen (DE-588)4136263-9 s Geschichte 1940-2000 z 1\p DE-604 Nationale Minderheit (DE-588)4039409-8 s Separatismus (DE-588)4054573-8 s Innerstaatlicher Konflikt (DE-588)7619747-5 s Eskalation (DE-588)4153029-9 s 2\p DE-604 Kriegsgefahr (DE-588)4137620-1 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-74729-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-76352-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511642012 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
