Zusammenfassung: | This book is about change in the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales. It argues that in the post-war years of economic growth and expanded educational opportunities, Catholics born in Great Britain achieved rates of upward social mobility comparable to those of the general population. In so doing there arose a 'new Catholic middle class', likely to be crucial for the future of Roman Catholicism in England and Wales. However, since one quarter of English Catholics were first-generation immigrants who had experienced some downward mobility, it could not be said that English Catholics generally had experienced a 'mobility momentum' relative to the rest of the population. Apart from the effects of social change, post-war Catholicism was also transformed as a result of the religious reforms legitimated by the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s. The net effect of these social and religious forces on English Catholicism was the dissolution of the boundaries which had formerly defended a 'fortress' church in a hostile world. The book identifies this, inter alia, in the widespread heterodoxy of belief and practice, and in the decline of marital endogamy and communal involvement |

Hornsby-Smith Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1987 1 online resource (xiii, 253 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 24 Feb 2016) This book is about change in the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales. The book identifies this, inter alia, in the widespread heterodoxy of belief and practice, and in the decline of marital endogamy and communal involvement Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1900-1987 gnd rswk-swf Sozialgeschichte 1945-1986 gnd rswk-swf Alltag, Brauchtum Geschichte Catholics / England / History / 20th century Catholics / Wales / History / 20th century Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 gnd rswk-swf Katholik (DE-588)4163454-8 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf England / Social life and customs / 1945- Wales / Social life and customs Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Wales (DE-588)4064435-2 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Katholik (DE-588)4163454-8 s Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s Geschichte 1900-1987 z 1\p DE-604 Katholische Kirche (DE-588)2009545-4 b 2\p DE-604 England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 s Sozialgeschichte 1945-1986 z 3\p DE-604 Wales (DE-588)4064435-2 g 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-09006-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-30313-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511897108 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
