Zusammenfassung: | The claim by certain rulers to universal empire has a long history stretching as far back as the Assyrian and Achaemenid Empires. This book traces its various manifestations in classical antiquity, the Islamic world, Asia and Central America as well as considering seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European discussions of international order. As such it is an exercise in comparative world history combining a multiplicity of approaches, from ancient history, to literary and philosophical studies, to the history of art and international relations and historical sociology. The notion of universal, imperial rule is presented as an elusive and much coveted prize among monarchs in history, around which developed forms of kingship and political culture. Different facets of the phenomenon are explored under three, broadly conceived, headings: symbolism, ceremony and diplomatic relations; universal or cosmopolitan literary high-cultures; and, finally, the inclination to present universal imperial rule as an expression of cosmic order |

Imperial universalism: further thoughts / John A. Hall The claim by certain rulers to universal empire has a long history stretching as far back as the Assyrian and Achaemenid Empires. Different facets of the phenomenon are explored under three, broadly conceived, headings: symbolism, ceremony and diplomatic relations; universal or cosmopolitan literary high-cultures; and, finally, the inclination to present universal imperial rule as an expression of cosmic order Geschichte Anfänge-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gesellschaft Philosophie Politik Imperialism / History Kings and rulers / History Imperialism / Social aspects / History Imperialism / Philosophy Political culture / History Civilization / History World history World politics / To 1900 Großmachtideologie (DE-588)4158291-3 gnd rswk-swf Großmacht (DE-588)4125218-4 gnd rswk-swf Reich (DE-588)4139742-3 gnd rswk-swf Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 gnd rswk-swf Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 gnd rswk-swf Eurasia / History Eurasia / Politics and government Eurasien (DE-588)4015685-0 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Eurasien (DE-588)4015685-0 g Reich (DE-588)4139742-3 s Großmacht (DE-588)4125218-4 s Großmachtideologie (DE-588)4158291-3 s Internationale Politik (DE-588)4072885-7 s Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 s Geschichte Anfänge-1800 z 2\p DE-604 Bang, Peter Fibiger 1973- (DE-588)124656749 edt Kołodziejczyk, Dariusz 1962- (DE-588)103659471 edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-107-02267-6 (DE-604)BV040194462 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-107-52747-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139136952 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
