Zusammenfassung: | This collection of essays looks at the distinctively English intellectual, social and political phenomenon of Latitudinarianism, which emerged during the Civil War and Interregnum and came into its own after the Restoration, becoming a virtual orthodoxy after 1688. Dividing into two parts, it first examines the importance of the Cambridge Platonists, who sought to embrace the newest philosophical and scientific movements within Church of England orthodoxy, and then moves into the later seventeenth century, from the Restoration onwards, culminating in essays on the philosopher John Locke. These contributions establish a firmly interdisciplinary basis for the subject, while collectively gravitating towards the importance of discourse and language as the medium for cultural exchange. The variety of approaches serves to illuminate the cultural indeterminacy of the period, in which inherited models and vocabularies were forced to undergo revisions, coinciding with the formation of many cultural institutions still governing English society |

Coudert -- Edward Stillingfleet, Henry More, and the decline of Moses Atticus : a note on seventeenth-century Anglican apologetics / Sarah Hutton -- Latitudinarians, neoplatonists, and the ancient wisdom / Joseph M. Levine -- Cudworth, More, and the mechanical analogy / Alan Gabbey -- Cudworth and Hobbes on is and ought / Perez Zagorin -- Latitudinarianism and toleration : historical myth versus political history / Richard Ashcraft -- The intellectual sources of Robert Boyle's philosophy of nature : Gassendi's voluntarism, and Boyle's physicotheological project / Margaret J. Osler -- Latitudinarianism and the "ideology" of the early Royal Society : Thomas Sprat's History of the Royal Society (1667) reconsidered / Michael Hunter -- Locke and the latitude-men : ignorance as a ground of toleration / G.A.J. Rogers -- John Locke and latitudinarianism / John Marshall This collection of essays looks at the distinctively English intellectual, social and political phenomenon of Latitudinarianism, which emerged during the Civil War and Interregnum and came into its own after the Restoration, becoming a virtual orthodoxy after 1688. The variety of approaches serves to illuminate the cultural indeterminacy of the period, in which inherited models and vocabularies were forced to undergo revisions, coinciding with the formation of many cultural institutions still governing English society Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1640-1700 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Naturwissenschaft Latitudinarianism (Church of England) / Congresses Cambridge Platonists / Congresses Philosophy, British / Congresses Science / England / History / 17th century / Congresses Theologie (DE-588)4059758-1 gnd rswk-swf Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien England / Intellectual life / 17th century / Congresses England / Religion / 17th century / Congresses Great Britain / History / Stuarts, 1603-1714 / Congresses England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift gnd-content England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Geschichte 1640-1700 z 1\p DE-604 Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 s 2\p DE-604 Theologie (DE-588)4059758-1 s 3\p DE-604 Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 4\p DE-604 Kroll, Richard W.
