Zusammenfassung: | The conversation parties of the bluestockings, held to debate contemporary ideas in eighteenth-century Britain, were vital in encouraging female artistic achievement. The bluestockings promoted links between learning and virtue in the public imagination, inventing a new kind of informal sociability that combined the life of the senses with that of the mind. This collection of essays, by leading scholars in the fields of literature, history and art history, provides an interdisciplinary treatment of bluestocking culture in eighteenth-century Britain. It is the first academic volume to concentrate on the rich visual and material culture that surrounded and supported the bluestocking project, from formal portraits and sculptures to commercially reproduced prints. By the early twentieth century, the term 'bluestocking' came to signify a dull and dowdy intellectual woman, but the original bluestockings inhabited a world in which brilliance was valued at every level and women were encouraged to shine and even dazzle |

By the early twentieth century, the term 'bluestocking' came to signify a dull and dowdy intellectual woman, but the original bluestockings inhabited a world in which brilliance was valued at every level and women were encouraged to shine and even dazzle Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1730-1830 gnd rswk-swf English literature / Women authors / History and criticism English literature / 18th century / History and criticism English literature / 19th century / History and criticism Women intellectuals / Great Britain Literary patrons / Great Britain Romantik (DE-588)4050491-8 gnd rswk-swf Blaustrumpfgesellschaft (DE-588)1045856630 gnd rswk-swf Schriftstellerin (DE-588)4053311-6 gnd rswk-swf Literarisches Leben (DE-588)4074272-6 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Romantik (DE-588)4050491-8 s Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Schriftstellerin (DE-588)4053311-6 s Blaustrumpfgesellschaft (DE-588)1045856630 s Geschichte 1730-1830 z 2\p DE-604 Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s Literarisches Leben (DE-588)4074272-6 s 3\p DE-604 Eger, Elizabeth 1971 (DE-588)141672447 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-76880-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511667428 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
