Zusammenfassung: | Slave Portraiture in the Atlantic World is the first book to focus on the individualized portrayal of enslaved people from the time of Europe's full engagement with plantation slavery in the late sixteenth century to its final official abolition in Brazil in 1888. While this period saw the emergence of portraiture as a major field of representation in Western art, 'slave' and 'portraiture' as categories appear to be mutually exclusive. On the one hand, the logic of chattel slavery sought to render the slave's body as an instrument for production, as the site of a non-subject. Portraiture, on the contrary, privileged the face as the primary visual matrix for the representation of a distinct individuality. Essays address this apparent paradox of 'slave portraits' from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, probing the historical conditions that made the creation of such rare and enigmatic objects possible and exploring their implications for a more complex understanding of power relations under slavery |

On the one hand, the logic of chattel slavery sought to render the slave's body as an instrument for production, as the site of a non-subject. Portraiture, on the contrary, privileged the face as the primary visual matrix for the representation of a distinct individuality. Essays address this apparent paradox of 'slave portraits' from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, probing the historical conditions that made the creation of such rare and enigmatic objects possible and exploring their implications for a more complex understanding of power relations under slavery Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Sklaverei Slavery in art Portraits Slavery / Atlantic Ocean Region / History Blacks in art Sklave Motiv (DE-588)4204854-0 gnd rswk-swf Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 gnd rswk-swf Atlantischer Raum (DE-588)4206638-4 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Atlantischer Raum (DE-588)4206638-4 g Sklave Motiv (DE-588)4204854-0 s Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 s Geschichte z 2\p DE-604 Lugo-Ortiz, Agnes J. 1960- (DE-588)1046327763 edt Rosenthal, Angela 1963-2010 (DE-588)1042427747 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-00439-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-53375-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139021845 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
