Zusammenfassung: | Wealth and Virtue reassesses the remarkable contribution of the Scottish Enlightenment to the formation of modern economics and to theories of capitalism. Its unique range indicates the scope of the Scottish intellectual achievement of the eighteenth century and explores the process by which the boundaries between economic thought, jurisprudence, moral philosophy and theoretical history came to be established. Dealing not only with major figures like Hume and Smith, there are also studies of lesser known thinkers like Andrew Fletcher, Gershom Carmichael, Lord Kames and John Millar as well as of Locke in the light of eighteenth century social theory, the intellectual culture of the University of Edinburgh in the middle of the eighteenth century and of the performance of the Scottish economy on the eve of the publication of the Wealth of Nations. While the scholarly emphasis is on the rigorous historical reconstruction of both theory and context, Wealth and Virtue directly addresses itself to modern political theorists and economists and throws light on a number of major focal points of controversy in legal and political philosophy |

spelling | Wealth and virtue the shaping of political economy in the Scottish enlightenment edited by Istvan Hont and Michael Ignatieff Wealth & Virtue Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1983 1 online resource (viii, 371 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Needs and justice in the Wealth of nations: an introductory essay Istvan Hont and Michael Ignatieff Where had the Scottish economy got to by the third quarter of the eighteenth century? T.C. Smout Gershom Carmichael and the natural jurisprudence tradition in eighteenth-century Scotland James Moore, Michael Silverthorne The Scottish professoriate and the polite academy, 1720-46 Peter Jones From applied theology to social analysis: the break between John Locke and the Scottish Enlightenment John Dunn The Scottish Enlightenment at the limits of the civic tradition John Robertson Adam Smith as civic moralist Nicholas Phillipson The legal needs of a commercial society: the jurisprudence of Lord Kames David Lieberman Cambridge paradigms and Scotch philosophers: a study of the relations between the civic humanist and the civil jurisprudential interpretation of eighteenth-century social thought J.G.A. Pocock Adam Smith's 'enduring particular result': a political and cosmopolitan perspective Donald Winch The 'rich country-poor country' debate in Scottish classical political economy Istvan Hont John Millar and individualism Michael Ignatieff Scottish echoes in eighteenth-century Italy Franco Venturi Wealth and Virtue reassesses the remarkable contribution of the Scottish Enlightenment to the formation of modern economics and to theories of capitalism. While the scholarly emphasis is on the rigorous historical reconstruction of both theory and context, Wealth and Virtue directly addresses itself to modern political theorists and economists and throws light on a number of major focal points of controversy in legal and political philosophy Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Wirtschaft Economics / Scotland / History / 18th century Philosophy, Scottish / 18th century Enlightenment / Scotland Geistesgeschichte (DE-588)4071653-3 gnd rswk-swf Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 gnd rswk-swf Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 gnd rswk-swf Sozialwissenschaften (DE-588)4055916-6 gnd rswk-swf Schottland Scotland / Intellectual life / 18th century Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 g Geistesgeschichte (DE-588)4071653-3 s Geschichte 1700-1800 z 2\p DE-604 Sozialwissenschaften (DE-588)4055916-6 s 3\p DE-604 Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 s 4\p DE-604 Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 s 5\p DE-604 Hont, Istvan 1947-2013 edt Ignatieff, Michael edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-23397-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-31214-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511625077 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
