Zusammenfassung: | A family's recently discovered correspondence provides the inspiration for this fascinating and deeply moving account of Jewish family life before, during and after the Holocaust. Rebecca Boehling and Uta Larkey reveal how the Kaufmann-Steinberg family was pulled apart under the Nazi regime and dispersed over three continents. The family's unique eight-way correspondence across two generations brings into sharp focus the dilemma of Jews in Nazi Germany facing the painful decisions of when, if and to where they should emigrate. The authors capture the family members' fluctuating emotions of hope, optimism, resignation and despair as well as the day-to-day concerns, experiences and dynamics of family life despite increasing persecution and impending deportation. Headed by two sisters who were among the first female business owners in Essen, the family was far from conventional and their story contributes new dimensions to our understanding of Jewish life in Germany and in exile during these dark years |

The authors capture the family members' fluctuating emotions of hope, optimism, resignation and despair as well as the day-to-day concerns, experiences and dynamics of family life despite increasing persecution and impending deportation. Headed by two sisters who were among the first female business owners in Essen, the family was far from conventional and their story contributes new dimensions to our understanding of Jewish life in Germany and in exile during these dark years Ostrand, Marianne Steinberg / 1911-2002 Steinberg family Kauffman family Geschichte 1933-1938 gnd rswk-swf Juden Jews / Germany / Essen / Biography Jews, German / United States / Biography Jewish refugees / United States / Biography Jews, German / Palestine / Biography Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) / Biography Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 gnd rswk-swf Familie (DE-588)4016397-0 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland USA Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 s Familie (DE-588)4016397-0 s Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Geschichte 1933-1938 z 1\p DE-604 Larkey, Uta Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-72854-6 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-89991-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139030274 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
