Zusammenfassung: | Alienation between the U.S. military and society has grown in recent decades. Such alienation is unhealthy, as it threatens both sufficient civilian control of the military and the long-standing ideal of the 'citizen soldier'. Nowhere is this issue more predominant than at many major universities, which began turning their backs on the military during the chaotic years of the Vietnam War. Arms and the University probes various dimensions of this alienation, as well as recent efforts to restore a closer relationship between the military and the university. Through theoretical and empirical analysis, Donald Alexander Downs and Ilia Murtazashvili show how a military presence on campus in the form of ROTC (including a case study of ROTC's return to Columbia and Harvard universities), military history and national security studies can enhance the civic and liberal education of non-military students, and in the process help to bridge the civil-military gap |

Conclusion: placing the military in the university Alienation between the U.S. military and society has grown in recent decades. Through theoretical and empirical analysis, Donald Alexander Downs and Ilia Murtazashvili show how a military presence on campus in the form of ROTC (including a case study of ROTC's return to Columbia and Harvard universities), military history and national security studies can enhance the civic and liberal education of non-military students, and in the process help to bridge the civil-military gap United States / Army / Reserve Officers' Training Corps United States / Army / Recruiting, enlistment, etc USA Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (DE-588)10013667-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1945-2011 gnd rswk-swf Education, Humanistic / United States Soldiers / Education (Higher) / United States Civil-military relations / United States Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 gnd rswk-swf Beziehung (DE-588)4145198-3 gnd rswk-swf Hochschulbildung (DE-588)4160198-1 gnd rswk-swf Zivilbevölkerung (DE-588)4190984-7 gnd rswk-swf Universität (DE-588)4061778-6 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 s Universität (DE-588)4061778-6 s Beziehung (DE-588)4145198-3 s Geschichte 1945-2011 z 1\p DE-604 USA Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (DE-588)10013667-9 b Hochschulbildung (DE-588)4160198-1 s Zivilbevölkerung (DE-588)4190984-7 s 2\p DE-604 Murtazashvili, Ilia 1975- Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-15670-7 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-19232-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511844447 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
