Zusammenfassung: | Nicholas Guyatt offers a completely new understanding of a central question in American history: how did Americans come to think that God favored the United States above other nations? Tracing the story of American providentialism, this book uncovers the British roots of American religious nationalism before the American Revolution and the extraordinary struggles of white Americans to reconcile their ideas of national mission with the racial diversity of the early republic. Making sense of previously diffuse debates on manifest destiny, millenarianism, and American mission, Providence and the Invention of the United States explains the origins and development of the idea that God has a special plan for America. This conviction supplied the United States with a powerful sense of national purpose, but it also prevented Americans from clearly understanding events and people that could not easily be fitted into the providential scheme |

This conviction supplied the United States with a powerful sense of national purpose, but it also prevented Americans from clearly understanding events and people that could not easily be fitted into the providential scheme Geschichte 1607-1876 gnd rswk-swf Außenpolitik Christentum Kirchengeschichte Nationalismus Religion Nationalism / United States Providence and government of God Nationalism / Religious aspects / Christianity Nationenbildung (DE-588)4075230-6 gnd rswk-swf Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 gnd rswk-swf Religiöse Identität (DE-588)4354651-1 gnd rswk-swf Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 gnd rswk-swf Vorsehung (DE-588)4140716-7 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien USA United States / Church history United States / Foreign relations / Great Britain USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Nationenbildung (DE-588)4075230-6 s Vorsehung (DE-588)4140716-7 s Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 s Nationalismus (DE-588)4041300-7 s Geschichte 1607-1876 z 1\p DE-604 Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s Religiöse Identität (DE-588)4354651-1 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-68730-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-86788-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511619137 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
