Zusammenfassung: | This study explores the use of other languages, especially Latin, in medieval and Renaissance English drama. Until the medieval period Latin was regarded as the sacramental language of authority, but in the newly politicized linguistic arena of the late fourteenth century it became a symbol of the potential enemy from Rome. In this book Janette Dillon examines why, during the period 1400 to 1600, other languages increasingly invade English plays, and how their significance is illuminated by developments in Church and state, in particular the advancing Reformation and expanding English nationalism. In marked contrast to other related studies, Dillon focuses on drama as performance and employs a wide range of works, from the mystery cycles to The Spanish Tragedy, and finally Shakespeare |

In marked contrast to other related studies, Dillon focuses on drama as performance and employs a wide range of works, from the mystery cycles to The Spanish Tragedy, and finally Shakespeare Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1300-1600 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English drama / Early modern and Elizabethan, 1500-1600 / History and criticism English drama / To 1500 / History and criticism Latin language, Medieval and modern / England Civilization, Medieval, in literature Language and culture / England / History Languages in contact / England / History Theater / England / History / Medieval, 500-1500 Theater / England / History / 16th century Mittelenglisch (DE-588)4039676-9 gnd rswk-swf Frühneuenglisch (DE-588)4352423-0 gnd rswk-swf Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 gnd rswk-swf Fremdsprache (DE-588)4018424-9 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 gnd rswk-swf Einschub Literatur (DE-588)4296793-4 gnd rswk-swf Publikum (DE-588)4047764-2 gnd rswk-swf Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf Frühneuenglisch (DE-588)4352423-0 s Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 s Einschub Literatur (DE-588)4296793-4 s Fremdsprache (DE-588)4018424-9 s Theater (DE-588)4059702-7 s Publikum (DE-588)4047764-2 s 1\p DE-604 Mittelenglisch (DE-588)4039676-9 s Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 s 2\p DE-604 England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s Geschichte 1300-1600 z 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03215-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-59334-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511549328 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
