Zusammenfassung: | Recent research into a self-taught tradition of English rural poetry has begun to offer a radically new dimension to our view of the role of poetry in the literary culture of the eighteenth century. In this important new study John Goodridge offers a detailed reading of key rural poems of the period, examines the ways in which eighteenth-century poets adapted Virgilian Georgic models, and reveals an illuminating link between rural poetry and agricultural and folkloric developments. Goodridge compares poetic accounts of rural labour by James Thomson, Stephen Duck, and Mary Collier, and makes a close analysis of one of the largely forgotten didactic epics of the eighteenth century, John Dyer's The Fleece. Through an exploration of the purpose of rural poetry and how it relates to the real world, Goodridge breaks through the often brittle surface of eighteenth-century poetry, to show how it reflects the ideologies and realities of contemporary life |

The shepherd's harvest -- Appendix A 'Siluria' -- Appendix B Eighteenth-century sheep breeds Recent research into a self-taught tradition of English rural poetry has begun to offer a radically new dimension to our view of the role of poetry in the literary culture of the eighteenth century. Through an exploration of the purpose of rural poetry and how it relates to the real world, Goodridge breaks through the often brittle surface of eighteenth-century poetry, to show how it reflects the ideologies and realities of contemporary life Virgil / Influence Vergilius Maro, Publius v70-v19 Georgica (DE-588)4249256-7 gnd rswk-swf Dyer, John 1699-1758 The fleece (DE-588)4487258-6 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English poetry / 18th century / History and criticism Rural conditions in literature Literature and society / Great Britain / History / 18th century Pastoral poetry, English / History and criticism Agricultural laborers in literature English poetry / Roman influences Country life in literature Agriculture in literature Farm life in literature Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Hirtendichtung (DE-588)4069731-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 gnd rswk-swf Landleben (DE-588)4034309-1 gnd rswk-swf Landleben Motiv (DE-588)4166610-0 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Dyer, John 1699-1758 The fleece (DE-588)4487258-6 u Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 s Landleben Motiv (DE-588)4166610-0 s Geschichte 1700-1800 z 1\p DE-604 Vergilius Maro, Publius v70-v19 Georgica (DE-588)4249256-7 u Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s 2\p DE-604 Landleben (DE-588)4034309-1 s 3\p DE-604 Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 4\p DE-604 Hirtendichtung (DE-588)4069731-9 s 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-43381-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-60432-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511584909 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
