Zusammenfassung: | In a compelling example of the cultural history of South Africa, Robert Ross offers a subtle and wide-ranging study of status and respectability in the colonial Cape between 1750 and 1850. His 1999 book describes the symbolism of dress, emblems, architecture, food, language, and polite conventions, paying particular attention to domestic relationships, gender, education and religion, and analyses the values and the modes of thinking current in different strata of the society. He argues that these cultural factors were related to high political developments in the Cape, and offers a rich account of the changes in social identity that accompanied the transition from Dutch to British overrule, and of the development of white racism and of ideologies of resistance to white domination. The result is a uniquely nuanced account of a colonial society |

Conclusion In a compelling example of the cultural history of South Africa, Robert Ross offers a subtle and wide-ranging study of status and respectability in the colonial Cape between 1750 and 1850. The result is a uniquely nuanced account of a colonial society Sozialgeschichte 1750-1870 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1750-1870 gnd rswk-swf Alltag, Brauchtum Geschichte Social status / South Africa / Cape of Good Hope / History Sozialstatus (DE-588)4077618-9 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Schichtung (DE-588)4077574-4 gnd rswk-swf Statussymbol (DE-588)4195861-5 gnd rswk-swf Südafrika (Staat) Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) / Social life and customs Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) / Social conditions Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) / History / To 1795 Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) / History / 1795-1872 Kapprovinz (DE-588)4073220-4 gnd rswk-swf Kapprovinz (DE-588)4073220-4 g Soziale Schichtung (DE-588)4077574-4 s Statussymbol (DE-588)4195861-5 s Geschichte 1750-1870 z 1\p DE-604 Sozialstatus (DE-588)4077618-9 s 2\p DE-604 Sozialgeschichte 1750-1870 z 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-12125-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-62122-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511497292 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
