Zusammenfassung: | This detailed and authoritative volume changes our conceptions of 'imperial' and 'African' history. Frederick Cooper gathers a vast range of archival sources in French and English to achieve a truly comparative study of colonial policy toward the recruitment, control, and institutionalization of African labor forces from the mid 1930s, when the labor question was first posed, to the late 1950s, when decolonization was well under way. Professor Cooper explores colonial conceptions of the African worker and shows how African trade union and political leaders used the new language of social change to claim equality and a share of power. This helped to persuade European officials that the 'modern' Africa they imagined was unaffordable. Britain and France could not reshape African society. As they left the continent, the question was how they had affected the ways in which Africans could reorganize society themselves |

As they left the continent, the question was how they had affected the ways in which Africans could reorganize society themselves Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1935-1960 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gewerkschaft Kolonie Labor / Africa / History / 20th century Labor movement / Africa / History / 20th century Labor unions / Africa / History / 20th century Labor laws and legislation / Africa / History / 20th century Decolonization / Africa / History / 20th century Entkolonialisierung (DE-588)4070860-3 gnd rswk-swf Arbeiterbewegung (DE-588)4002581-0 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitsrecht (DE-588)4002769-7 gnd rswk-swf Arbeiter (DE-588)4112560-5 gnd rswk-swf Gewerkschaft (DE-588)4020872-2 gnd rswk-swf Afrika Frankreich Großbritannien France / Colonies / Africa Great Britain / Colonies / Africa Africa / Colonial influence Anglophones Afrika (DE-588)4002049-6 gnd rswk-swf Subsaharisches Afrika (DE-588)4053770-5 gnd rswk-swf Frankophones Afrika (DE-588)4018143-1 gnd rswk-swf Frankophones Afrika (DE-588)4018143-1 g Gewerkschaft (DE-588)4020872-2 s Arbeitsrecht (DE-588)4002769-7 s Entkolonialisierung (DE-588)4070860-3 s Anglophones Afrika (DE-588)4002049-6 g Geschichte 1935-1960 z 1\p DE-604 Subsaharisches Afrika (DE-588)4053770-5 g Arbeiterbewegung (DE-588)4002581-0 s 2\p DE-604 Arbeiter (DE-588)4112560-5 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-56251-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-56600-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511584091 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
