Zusammenfassung: | South India is often portrayed as a land of Hindu orthodoxy, yet in fact three great 'world religions' have inter-acted in the region over many centuries. Saints, Goddesses and Kings uses a powerful combination of oral, literary and archival evidence to investigate the social and religious world of those large and influential groups of South Indians who came to identify themselves as Christians and Muslims, while retaining powerful links with the religion and culture of the wider society. Susan Bayly shows how Christianity and Islam spread along the military and agricultural frontiers of southern India, and how certain beliefs and practices derived local force from an ambiguous relationship with the worship of existing Hindu goddesses. Saints, Goddesses and Kings thus illumines not only the meaning and history of religious conversion and the nature of community, but wider processes of social and political change within the sub-continent and, indeed, colonial societies in general |

Saints, Goddesses and Kings thus illumines not only the meaning and history of religious conversion and the nature of community, but wider processes of social and political change within the sub-continent and, indeed, colonial societies in general Geschichte 1700-1900 gnd rswk-swf Sozialgeschichte 1700-1900 gnd rswk-swf Christentum Geschichte Muslims / India, South / History Islam / India, South / History Christians / India, South / History Christianity / India, South Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 gnd rswk-swf Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 gnd rswk-swf Muslim (DE-588)4040921-1 gnd rswk-swf Christ (DE-588)4010071-6 gnd rswk-swf India, South / Civilization Indien Süd (DE-588)4026754-4 gnd rswk-swf Tamil Nadu (DE-588)4078142-2 gnd rswk-swf Indien Süd (DE-588)4026754-4 g Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 s Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 s Sozialgeschichte 1700-1900 z 1\p DE-604 Tamil Nadu (DE-588)4078142-2 g Muslim (DE-588)4040921-1 s Geschichte 1700-1900 z 2\p DE-604 Christ (DE-588)4010071-6 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-37201-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-89103-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511583513 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
