Zusammenfassung: | In this 1990 book John Limon examines the various ways American authors have approached the writing of fiction (and justified that writing) in an age increasingly dominated by science. He focuses in particular on Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne - three highly articulate and highly alarmed witnesses to the professionalisation of science, the great crisis in modern intellectual history. It was, he argues, especially specially difficult for American writers to face this crisis since they could make no appeal to traditional values: America, after all, had never really been a pre-scientific society |

He focuses in particular on Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne - three highly articulate and highly alarmed witnesses to the professionalisation of science, the great crisis in modern intellectual history. It was, he argues, especially specially difficult for American writers to face this crisis since they could make no appeal to traditional values: America, after all, had never really been a pre-scientific society Geschichte 1798-1987 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1790-1990 gnd rswk-swf American fiction / History and criticism Literature and science / United States Science in literature Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaft Motiv (DE-588)4436320-5 gnd rswk-swf Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 gnd rswk-swf USA United States / Intellectual life USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 s Geschichte 1790-1990 z 1\p DE-604 Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Wissenschaft Motiv (DE-588)4436320-5 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 2\p DE-604 Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 s 3\p DE-604 Geschichte 1798-1987 z 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10763-1 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-35251-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511570476 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
