Zusammenfassung: | In Rhythm and Will in Victorian Poetry, first published in 1999, Matthew Campbell explores the work of four Victorian poets - Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins and Hardy - as they show a consistent and innovative concern with questions of human agency and will. The Victorians saw the virtues attendant upon a strong will as central to themselves and to their culture, and Victorian poetry strove to find an aesthetic form to represent this sense of the human will. Through close study of the metre, rhyme and rhythm of a wide range of poems - including monologue, lyric and elegy - Campbell reveals how closely technical questions of poetics are related, in the work of these poets, to issues of psychology, ethics and social change. He goes on to discuss more general questions of poetics, and the implications of the achievement of the Victorian poets in a wider context, from Milton through Romanticism and into contemporary critical debate |

He goes on to discuss more general questions of poetics, and the implications of the achievement of the Victorian poets in a wider context, from Milton through Romanticism and into contemporary critical debate Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson / Baron / 1809-1892 / Criticism and interpretation Browning, Robert / 1812-1889 / Criticism and interpretation Hopkins, Gerard Manley / 1844-1889 / Criticism and interpretation Hardy, Thomas / 1840-1928 / Poetic works Hardy, Thomas 1840-1928 (DE-588)118545930 gnd rswk-swf Browning, Robert 1812-1889 (DE-588)118515780 gnd rswk-swf Tennyson, Alfred 1809-1892 (DE-588)118621327 gnd rswk-swf Hopkins, Gerard Manley 1844-1889 (DE-588)118553526 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1830-1900 gnd rswk-swf Englisch Geschichte English poetry / History and criticism Will in literature Literature and society / Great Britain / History / 19th century English language / 19th century / Versification English language / 19th century / Rhythm Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 gnd rswk-swf Willensfreiheit (DE-588)4079320-5 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Wille Motiv (DE-588)4291133-3 gnd rswk-swf Metrum (DE-588)4169752-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 s Wille Motiv (DE-588)4291133-3 s Geschichte 1830-1900 z 1\p DE-604 Hardy, Thomas 1840-1928 (DE-588)118545930 p Metrum (DE-588)4169752-2 s Willensfreiheit (DE-588)4079320-5 s 2\p DE-604 Hopkins, Gerard Manley 1844-1889 (DE-588)118553526 p 3\p DE-604 Tennyson, Alfred 1809-1892 (DE-588)118621327 p 4\p DE-604 Browning, Robert 1812-1889 (DE-588)118515780 p 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-60422-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-64295-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484117 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
