Zusammenfassung: | Interest in Shi'a Islam has increased greatly in recent years, although Shi'ism in the Indian subcontinent has remained largely underexplored. Focusing on the influential Shi'a minority of Lucknow and the United Provinces, a region that was largely under Shi'a rule until 1856, this book traces the history of Indian Shi'ism through the colonial period toward independence in 1947. Drawing on a range of new sources, including religious writing, polemical literature and clerical biography, it assesses seminal developments including the growth of Shi'a religious activism, madrasa education, missionary activity, ritual innovation and the politicization of the Shi'a community. As a consequence of these significant religious and social transformations, a Shi'a sectarian identity developed that existed in separation from rather than in interaction with its Sunni counterparts. In this way the painful birth of modern sectarianism was initiated, the consequences of which are very much alive in South Asia today |

Madrasas, mujtahids, and missionaries: Shi'a clerical expansion in colonial India; 2. Mosques, majalis and Muharram: marketplace Shi'ism; 3. Anjumans, endowments and Indian Shi'ism: the making of Shi'a society; 4. Aligarh, jihad, and pan-Islam: the politicisation of the Indian Shi'a; 5. The tabarra agitation and Shi'a-Sunni conflict in late-colonial India; Conclusion Interest in Shi'a Islam has increased greatly in recent years, although Shi'ism in the Indian subcontinent has remained largely underexplored. In this way the painful birth of modern sectarianism was initiated, the consequences of which are very much alive in South Asia today Geschichte 1800-1950 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1890-1940 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Shīʻah / India / History Shīʻah / Customs and practices Islam and politics / India Islamic sects / India Religious life / Shīʻah Konflikt (DE-588)4032081-9 gnd rswk-swf Schiiten (DE-588)4052455-3 gnd rswk-swf Sunniten (DE-588)4184103-7 gnd rswk-swf Indien Lucknow (India) / Religious life and customs Uttar Pradesh (India) / Religious life and customs Indien (DE-588)4026722-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Indien (DE-588)4026722-2 g Schiiten (DE-588)4052455-3 s Geschichte 1800-1950 z DE-604 Sunniten (DE-588)4184103-7 s Konflikt (DE-588)4032081-9 s Geschichte 1890-1940 z 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-00460-3 (DE-604)BV039815615 Cambridge studies in Indian history and society 18 (DE-604)BV047196524 18 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511791505 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
