Zusammenfassung: | Synchronic sociolinguistics has been particularly convincing in its use of quantitative models to demonstrates how 'the present might explain the past'. However, the relevance of sociolinguistics to historical linguistics 'using the past to explain the present', has been largely ignored. In this volume Dr Romaine lays the foundation for a field of research encompassing both historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, which aims to investigate and account for language variation within a particular speech community over time. The socio-historical approach is illustrated here by a detailed analysis of the development of relative clause formation strategies in Middle Scots. This case study raises fundamental questions about the epistemological status of sociolinguistic theory and in particular its claims to an empirical foundation. Her own preliminary suggestions for a truly integrative sociolinguistic theory will be of interest to sociolinguists, historical linguists and general linguists |

Her own preliminary suggestions for a truly integrative sociolinguistic theory will be of interest to sociolinguists, historical linguists and general linguists Bailey, Charles James Nice 1926- (DE-588)119094002 gnd rswk-swf Labov, William 1927-2024 (DE-588)118568493 gnd rswk-swf Englisch Sociolinguistics Historical linguistics Scots language English language / Grammar, Historical English language / Syntax Soziolinguistik (DE-588)4077623-2 gnd rswk-swf Historische Soziolinguistik (DE-588)4586743-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Mittelschottisch (DE-588)4241318-7 gnd rswk-swf Mittelenglisch (DE-588)4039676-9 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Relativsatz (DE-588)4158385-1 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Linguistik (DE-588)4074250-7 gnd rswk-swf Historische Sprachwissenschaft (DE-588)4127276-6 gnd rswk-swf Relativsatz (DE-588)4158385-1 s Mittelschottisch (DE-588)4241318-7 s Soziolinguistik (DE-588)4077623-2 s 1\p DE-604 Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 2\p DE-604 Bailey, Charles James Nice 1926- (DE-588)119094002 p Linguistik (DE-588)4074250-7 s 3\p DE-604 Labov, William 1927-2024 (DE-588)118568493 p 4\p DE-604 Historische Sprachwissenschaft (DE-588)4127276-6 s 5\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s 6\p DE-604 7\p DE-604 Mittelenglisch (DE-588)4039676-9 s 8\p DE-604 Historische Soziolinguistik (DE-588)4586743-4 s 9\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-11233-8 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-23750-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511720130 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 8\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 9\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
