Zusammenfassung: | Medieval commentaries on the origin and history of language used biblical history, from Creation to the Tower of Babel, as their starting-point, and described the progressive impairment of an originally perfect language. Biblical and classical sources raised questions for both medieval poets and commentators about the nature of language, its participation in the Fall, and its possible redemption. John M. Fyler focuses on how three major poets - Chaucer, Dante, and Jean de Meun - participated in these debates about language. He offers fresh analyses of how the history of language is described and debated in the Divine Comedy, the Canterbury Tales and the Roman de la Rose. While Dante follows the Augustinian idea of the Fall and subsequent redemption of language, Jean de Meun and Chaucer are skeptical about the possibilities for linguistic redemption and resign themselves, at least half-comically, to the linguistic implications of the Fall and the declining world |

Fyler Language & the Declining World in Chaucer, Dante, & Jean de Meun Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2007 1 online resource (xii, 306 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Cambridge studies in medieval literature 63 Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) The biblical history of language -- Love and language in Jean de Meun -- Dante and Chaucer's Dante -- The prison-house of language Medieval commentaries on the origin and history of language used biblical history, from Creation to the Tower of Babel, as their starting-point, and described the progressive impairment of an originally perfect language. While Dante follows the Augustinian idea of the Fall and subsequent redemption of language, Jean de Meun and Chaucer are skeptical about the possibilities for linguistic redemption and resign themselves, at least half-comically, to the linguistic implications of the Fall and the declining world Chaucer, Geoffrey / -1400 Dante Alighieri / 1265-1321 Jean / de Meun / approximately 1240-approximately 1305 Jean de Meung -1305 (DE-588)118557203 gnd rswk-swf Jean de Meung -1305 Roman de la rose (DE-588)4128615-7 gnd rswk-swf Chaucer, Geoffrey 1343-1400 The Canterbury tales (DE-588)4135927-6 gnd rswk-swf Dante Alighieri 1265-1321 Divina commedia (DE-588)4113270-1 gnd rswk-swf Dante Alighieri 1265-1321 (DE-588)118523708 gnd rswk-swf Chaucer, Geoffrey 1343-1400 (DE-588)118520245 gnd rswk-swf Bible / Genesis, I / Criticism, interpretation, etc Bibel Genesis (DE-588)4020126-0 gnd rswk-swf Bibel Historical linguistics Sprachtheorie (DE-588)4121708-1 gnd rswk-swf Chaucer, Geoffrey 1343-1400 (DE-588)118520245 p Bibel Genesis (DE-588)4020126-0 u Sprachtheorie (DE-588)4121708-1 s 1\p DE-604 Dante Alighieri 1265-1321 (DE-588)118523708 p 2\p DE-604 Jean de Meung -1305 (DE-588)118557203 p 3\p DE-604 Dante Alighieri 1265-1321 Divina commedia (DE-588)4113270-1 u 4\p DE-604 Chaucer, Geoffrey 1343-1400 The Canterbury tales (DE-588)4135927-6 u 5\p DE-604 Jean de Meung -1305 Roman de la rose (DE-588)4128615-7 u 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-14771-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-87215-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511627446 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
