Zusammenfassung: | Markku Peltonen examines humanist and republican themes in English political thinking between the mid-sixteenth century and the Civil War. He challenges the dominant view that humanism fizzled out in the middle of the sixteenth century only to re-emerge during the 1650s in the writings of such classical republicans as James Harrington and John Milton. The English continued to use central notions of the humanist tradition such as the virtuous civic life and vera nobilitas to portray themselves as citizens, characterizing their life as one of participation rather than subjection. They often resorted to openly republican themes - notably that governors be elected rather than hereditary - and the classical idea of the mixed constitution was profoundly influential. Dr Peltonen casts an important new perspective on these humanist and republican themes, and locates their uses in specific historical circumstances |

The continuity of the humanist tradition in early Caroline England Markku Peltonen examines humanist and republican themes in English political thinking between the mid-sixteenth century and the Civil War. Dr Peltonen casts an important new perspective on these humanist and republican themes, and locates their uses in specific historical circumstances Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1570-1640 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Political science / Great Britain / History / 16th century Political science / Great Britain / History / 17th century Humanism / England / History / 16th century Humanism / England / History / 17th century Republicanism / Great Britain / History Humanismus (DE-588)4026140-2 gnd rswk-swf Republikanismus (DE-588)4115751-5 gnd rswk-swf Politisches Denken (DE-588)4115590-7 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Politisches Denken (DE-588)4115590-7 s Republikanismus (DE-588)4115751-5 s Geschichte 1570-1640 z 2\p DE-604 Humanismus (DE-588)4026140-2 s 3\p DE-604 Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-49695-7 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-61716-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511598562 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
