Zusammenfassung: | High rates of divorce, often taken to be a modern and western phenomenon, were also typical of medieval Islamic societies. By pitting these high rates of divorce against the Islamic ideal of marriage,Yossef Rapoport radically challenges usual assumptions about the legal inferiority of Muslim women and their economic dependence on men. He argues that marriages in late medieval Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem had little in common with the patriarchal models advocated by jurists and moralists. The transmission of dowries, women's access to waged labour, and the strict separation of property between spouses made divorce easy and normative, initiated by wives as often as by their husbands. This carefully researched work of social history is interwoven with intimate accounts of individual medieval lives, making for a truly compelling read. It will be of interest to scholars of all disciplines concerned with the history of women and gender in Islam |

It will be of interest to scholars of all disciplines concerned with the history of women and gender in Islam Geschichte 1300-1500 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Marriage / Egypt / Cairo / History / To 1500 Marriage / Syria / Damascus / History / To 1500 Marriage / Jerusalem / History / To 1500 Divorce / Egypt / Cairo / History / To 1500 Divorce / Syria / Damascus / History / To 1500 Divorce / Jerusalem / History / To 1500 Marriage (Islamic law) Divorce (Islamic law) Eheschließung (DE-588)4013657-7 gnd rswk-swf Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 gnd rswk-swf Ehescheidung (DE-588)4013656-5 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Muslimin (DE-588)4120776-2 gnd rswk-swf Syrien Islamic countries / Social conditions Damaskus (DE-588)4010956-2 gnd rswk-swf Kairo (DE-588)4029236-8 gnd rswk-swf Jerusalem (DE-588)4028586-8 gnd rswk-swf Kairo (DE-588)4029236-8 g Eheschließung (DE-588)4013657-7 s Ehescheidung (DE-588)4013656-5 s Damaskus (DE-588)4010956-2 g Jerusalem (DE-588)4028586-8 g Geschichte 1300-1500 z 1\p DE-604 Muslimin (DE-588)4120776-2 s Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 s 2\p DE-604 Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 s 3\p DE-604 Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-04580-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-84715-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511497506 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
