Zusammenfassung: | In this volume, Ian Watt examines the myths of Faust, Don Quixote, Don Juan and Robinson Crusoe, as the distinctive products of modern society. He traces the way the original versions of Faust, Don Quixote and Don Juan - all written within a forty-year period during the Counter Reformation - presented unflattering portrayals of the three figures, while the Romantic period two centuries later recreated them as admirable and even heroic. The twentieth century retained their prestige as mythical figures, but with a new note of criticism. Robinson Crusoe came much later than the other three, but his fate can be seen as representative of the new religious, economic and social attitudes which succeeded the Counter-Reformation. The four figures help to reveal problems of individualism in the modern period: solitude, narcissism, and the claims of the self versus the claims of society. They all pursue their own view of what they should be, raising strong questions about their heroes' character and the societies whose ideals they reflect |

Myth and individualism -- Coda: Thoughts on the Twentieth Century -- Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus -- Michel Tournier's Friday -- Some notes on the present In this volume, Ian Watt examines the myths of Faust, Don Quixote, Don Juan and Robinson Crusoe, as the distinctive products of modern society. They all pursue their own view of what they should be, raising strong questions about their heroes' character and the societies whose ideals they reflect Don Juan (DE-588)118526685 gnd rswk-swf Crusoe, Robinson Fiktive Gestalt (DE-588)119139243 gnd rswk-swf Don Quijote Fiktive Gestalt (DE-588)118680315 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1587-1719 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1587-1967 gnd rswk-swf Individualism in literature Literature and society Held (DE-588)4125655-4 gnd rswk-swf Individualismus (DE-588)4131852-3 gnd rswk-swf Mythos (DE-588)4075159-4 gnd rswk-swf Individualismus Motiv (DE-588)4420142-4 gnd rswk-swf Faustdichtung (DE-588)4123190-9 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Faustdichtung (DE-588)4123190-9 s Don Quijote Fiktive Gestalt (DE-588)118680315 p Don Juan (DE-588)118526685 p Individualismus Motiv (DE-588)4420142-4 s Crusoe, Robinson Fiktive Gestalt (DE-588)119139243 p Individualismus (DE-588)4131852-3 s DE-604 Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Geschichte 1587-1719 z Mythos (DE-588)4075159-4 s Geschichte 1587-1967 z 1\p DE-604 2\p DE-604 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Held (DE-588)4125655-4 s 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-48011-6 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-58564-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511549236 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
