Zusammenfassung: | Imperial Boundaries is a study of imperial expansion and local transformation on Russia's Don Steppe frontier during the age of Peter the Great. Brian Boeck connects the rivalry of the Russian and Ottoman empires in the northern Black Sea basin to the social history of the Don Cossacks, who were transformed from an open, democratic, multiethnic, male fraternity dedicated to frontier raiding into a closed, ethnic community devoted to defending and advancing the boundaries of the Russian state. He shows how by promoting border patrol, migration control, bureaucratic regulation of cross-border contacts and deportation of dissidents, Peter I destroyed the world of the old steppe and created a new imperial Cossack order in its place. In examining this transformation, Imperial Boundaries addresses key historical issues of imperial expansion, the delegitimization of non-state violence, the construction of borders, and the encroaching boundaries of state authority in the lives of local communities |

In examining this transformation, Imperial Boundaries addresses key historical issues of imperial expansion, the delegitimization of non-state violence, the construction of borders, and the encroaching boundaries of state authority in the lives of local communities Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1667-1739 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1739 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gesellschaft Cossacks / Russia (Federation) / Don River Region / History Imperialism / Social aspects / Russia (Federation) / Don River Region / History Donkosaken (DE-588)4234818-3 gnd rswk-swf Kosaken (DE-588)4032542-8 gnd rswk-swf Grenzschutz (DE-588)4158152-0 gnd rswk-swf Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 gnd rswk-swf Don River Region (Russia) / History / 18th century Russia (Federation) / History / Peter I, 1689-1725 Russia (Federation) / Territorial expansion Russia (Federation) / Boundaries Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 gnd rswk-swf Don-Gebiet (DE-588)4289331-8 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 g Donkosaken (DE-588)4234818-3 s Grenzschutz (DE-588)4158152-0 s Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 g Geschichte 1600-1739 z DE-604 Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 s Don-Gebiet (DE-588)4289331-8 g Kosaken (DE-588)4032542-8 s Geschichte 1667-1739 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardback 978-0-521-51463-7 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-107-69501-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511642104 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
