Zusammenfassung: | Rajnarayan Chandavarkar presents the first major study of the relationship between labour and capital in India's economic development in the early twentieth-century. He explores the emergence of capitalism in the region, the development of the cotton textile industry, its particular problems in the 1920s and 1930s and the mill owners' and the state's responses to them. The author also investigates how a labour force was formed in Bombay - its rural roots, urban networks, industrial organisation and the way in which it shaped capitalist strategies. In a subject dominated by the assumption of unities, Rajnarayan Chandavarkar convincingly demonstrates the fragmentation of class, on the side of both capital and labour. Their interaction sometimes exacerbated their internal differences. But, the author also asks on what terms, to what ends, and under what circumstances solidarities could be forged between workers |

Epilogue: workers' politics -- class, caste and nation Rajnarayan Chandavarkar presents the first major study of the relationship between labour and capital in India's economic development in the early twentieth-century. But, the author also asks on what terms, to what ends, and under what circumstances solidarities could be forged between workers Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1900-1940 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Kapitalismus Wirtschaft Working class / India / Mumbai / History / 20th century Cotton textile industry / India / Mumbai / History / 20th century Capitalism / India / Mumbai / History / 20th century Industrialisierung (DE-588)4026776-3 gnd rswk-swf Arbeiter (DE-588)4112560-5 gnd rswk-swf Kapitalismus (DE-588)4029577-1 gnd rswk-swf Baumwollindustrie (DE-588)4319308-0 gnd rswk-swf Indien Mumbai (India) / Economic conditions Mumbai (DE-588)10013721-0 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Mumbai (DE-588)10013721-0 g Industrialisierung (DE-588)4026776-3 s Kapitalismus (DE-588)4029577-1 s Geschichte 1900-1940 z 2\p DE-604 Baumwollindustrie (DE-588)4319308-0 s Arbeiter (DE-588)4112560-5 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-41496-8 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-52595-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511583551 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
