Zusammenfassung: | The essays in An Interrupted Past describe the fate of those German-speaking historians who fled from Nazi Europe to the United States. Their story is set into several contexts: the traditional relationship between German and American historiography, the evolution of the German historical profession in the twentieth century, the onset of Nazi persecution after 1933, the special situation in Austria, and the difficulty of settling the refugees in their new homeland. In addition to articles on prominent scholars, there are accounts of the group as a whole, including information on more than ninety individuals, and of their family lives. An Interrupted Past is set in one of the darkest periods in human history, a time of political catastrophe and personal suffering. Yet the lives recorded here also illustrate people's capacity to survive, adjust, and create under difficult circumstances |

spelling | An Interrupted past German-speaking refugee historians in the United States after 1933 edited by Hartmut Lehmann and James J. Sheehan Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1991 1 online resource (x, 234 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Publications of the German Historical Institute Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) German and American historiography in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries / Ernst Schulin -- German historiography during the Weimar Republic and the émigré historians / Wolfgang J. Mommsen -- The historical seminar of the University of Berlin in the twenties / Felix Gilbert -- Refugee historians in America : preemigration Germany to 1939 / Michael H. Kater -- "Uphill work" : the German refugee historians and American institutions of higher learning / Karen J. Greenberg -- Everyday life and emigration : the role of women / Sibylle Quack -- The special case of Austrian refugee historians / Fritz Fellner --Schicksalsgeschichte : refugee historians in the United States / Catherine Epstein The essays in An Interrupted Past describe the fate of those German-speaking historians who fled from Nazi Europe to the United States. Yet the lives recorded here also illustrate people's capacity to survive, adjust, and create under difficult circumstances Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1933-1980 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1933-1970 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Historians / United States / Congresses Historians / Germany / Congresses Historians / Austria / Congresses Political refugees / United States / Congresses Political refugees / Germany / Congresses Political refugees / Austria / Congresses Historiography / United States / History / 20th century / Congresses German Americans / Congresses Österreicher (DE-588)4075594-0 gnd rswk-swf Historiker (DE-588)4025098-2 gnd rswk-swf Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland USA Österreich USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Deutsches Sprachgebiet (DE-588)4070370-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift gnd-content USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 s Österreicher (DE-588)4075594-0 s Historiker (DE-588)4025098-2 s Geschichte 1933-1980 z 1\p DE-604 Deutsches Sprachgebiet (DE-588)4070370-8 g Geschichte 1933-1970 z 2\p DE-604 Lehmann, Hartmut 1936- edt Sheehan, James J. edt German Historical Institute (Washington, D.C.) issuing body Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-40326-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-55833-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139052603 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
