Zusammenfassung: | The dismissal of civil servants on racist or political grounds in April 1933 marked the beginning of a massive, forced exodus of mainly Jewish scholars and scientists from Nazi Germany - a phenomenon unprecedented in the modern history of academic life. The essays in this volume examine whether that 'exodus of reason' lead to significant scientific change, and if so, how that change should be characterised. The volume challenges the focus of earlier work on the 'intellectual migration' on losses (for German science) and gains (for British and American science). Instead, the authors proceed from the assumption that the sciences are open, dynamic, and historically contingent systems, and explore the multiple, complex interactions of biographical, social, and cultural circumstances with changes - or lack of change - in the émigrés' scientific thinking and research |

Hoch From public law to political science? The emigration of German scholars after 1933 and their influence on the transformation of a discipline Alfons Söllner Epilogue The refugee scholar in America : the case of Paul Tillich Karen J. Greenberg The dismissal of civil servants on racist or political grounds in April 1933 marked the beginning of a massive, forced exodus of mainly Jewish scholars and scientists from Nazi Germany - a phenomenon unprecedented in the modern history of academic life. The essays in this volume examine whether that 'exodus of reason' lead to significant scientific change, and if so, how that change should be characterised. The volume challenges the focus of earlier work on the 'intellectual migration' on losses (for German science) and gains (for British and American science). Instead, the authors proceed from the assumption that the sciences are open, dynamic, and historically contingent systems, and explore the multiple, complex interactions of biographical, social, and cultural circumstances with changes - or lack of change - in the émigrés' scientific thinking and research Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1933-1945 gnd rswk-swf Geistesgeschichte 1933-1945 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Migration Germans / United States / History / 20th century Germans / Great Britain / History / 20th century Brain drain / Germany / History / 20th century Brain drain / United States / History / 20th century Brain drain / Great Britain / History / 20th century Deutscher Flüchtling (DE-588)4414215-8 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaftler (DE-588)4066567-7 gnd rswk-swf Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Großbritannien USA Germany / Emigration and immigration / History / 1933-1945 Germany / Emigration and immigration / History / 20th century United States / Intellectual life / 20th century Great Britain / Intellectual life / 20th century Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Wissenschaftler (DE-588)4066567-7 s Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 s Geschichte 1933-1945 z 1\p DE-604 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Deutscher Flüchtling (DE-588)4414215-8 s Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Geistesgeschichte 1933-1945 z 2\p DE-604 Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 s 3\p DE-604 Ash, Mitchell G. 1948- (DE-588)120621347 edt Söllner, Alfons 1947- (DE-588)109307615 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-49741-1 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-52278-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139052542 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
