Zusammenfassung: | The end of the Cold War demonstrated the historical possibility of peaceful change and seemingly showed the superiority of non-realist approaches in International Relations. Yet in the post-Cold War period many European countries have experienced a resurgence of a distinctively realist tradition: geopolitics. Geopolitics is an approach which emphasizes the relationship between politics and power on the one hand; and territory, location and environment on the other. This comparative study shows how the revival of geopolitics came not despite, but because of, the end of the Cold War. Disoriented in their self-understandings and conception of external roles by the events of 1989, many European foreign policy actors used the determinism of geopolitical thought to find their place in world politics quickly. The book develops a constructivist methodology to study causal mechanisms and its comparative approach allows for a broad assessment of some of the fundamental dynamics of European security |

This comparative study shows how the revival of geopolitics came not despite, but because of, the end of the Cold War. Disoriented in their self-understandings and conception of external roles by the events of 1989, many European foreign policy actors used the determinism of geopolitical thought to find their place in world politics quickly. The book develops a constructivist methodology to study causal mechanisms and its comparative approach allows for a broad assessment of some of the fundamental dynamics of European security Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1990-2011 gnd rswk-swf Außenpolitik Geschichte Geopolitics / Europe / History / 20th century Geopolitics / Europe / History / 21st century Geopolitik (DE-588)4156741-9 gnd rswk-swf Europa Europe / Foreign relations / 1989- Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Geopolitik (DE-588)4156741-9 s Geschichte 1990-2011 z 2\p DE-604 Guzzini, Stefano 1963- (DE-588)171202554 edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-02734-3 (DE-604)BV040662997 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-107-67650-3 (DE-604)BV040662997 Cambridge studies in international relations 124 (DE-604)BV041243422 124 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139225809 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
