Zusammenfassung: | This important collection brings together both established figures and new researchers to offer fresh perspectives on the ever-controversial subject of the history of witchcraft. Using Keith Thomas's Religion and the Decline of Magic as a starting point, the contributors explore the changes of the last twenty-five years in the understanding of early modern witchcraft, and suggest new approaches, especially concerning the cultural dimensions of the subject. Witchcraft cases must be understood as power struggles, over gender and ideology as well as social relationships, with a crucial role played by alternative representations. Witchcraft was always a contested idea, never fully established in early modern culture but much harder to dislodge than has usually been assumed. The essays are European in scope, with examples from Germany, France, and the Spanish expansion into the New World, as well as a strong core of English material |

spelling | Witchcraft in early modern Europe studies in culture and belief edited by Jonathan Barry, Marianne Hester, and Gareth Roberts Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1996 1 online resource (xiv, 368 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Past and present publications Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) 'Many reasons why': witchcraft and the problem of multiple explanation / Robin Briggs -- Witchcraft studies in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland / Wolfgang Behringer -- State-building and witch hunting in early modern Europe / Brian P. Levack -- The devil's encounter with America / Fernando Cervantes -- 'Saints or sorcerers': Quakerism, demonology and the decline of witchcraft in seventeenth-century England / Peter Elmer -- The descendants of Circe: witches and Renaissance fictions / Gareth Roberts -- Witchcraft and fantasy in early modern Germany / Lyndal Roper -- The devil in East Anglia: the Matthew Hopkins trials reconsidered / Jim Sharpe -- Witchcraft in early modern Kent: stereotypes and the background to accusations / Malcolm Gaskill -- Patriarchal reconstruction and witch hunting / Marianne Hester -- Witchcraft repealed / Ian Bostridge -- On the continuation of witchcraft / Willem de Blecourt This important collection brings together both established figures and new researchers to offer fresh perspectives on the ever-controversial subject of the history of witchcraft. The essays are European in scope, with examples from Germany, France, and the Spanish expansion into the New World, as well as a strong core of English material Geschichte 1500-1700 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1500-1753 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Witchcraft / Europe / History Witchcraft / England / History Occultism / Europe Hexe (DE-588)4024799-5 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Hexenverfolgung (DE-588)4113908-2 gnd rswk-swf Hexenglaube (DE-588)4113907-0 gnd rswk-swf Europa Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 gnd rswk-swf Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content 2\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 09.1991 Exeter gnd-content Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Hexenglaube (DE-588)4113907-0 s Geschichte 1500-1700 z 3\p DE-604 Hexe (DE-588)4024799-5 s Geschichte 1500-1753 z 4\p DE-604 Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 g Hexenverfolgung (DE-588)4113908-2 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s DE-604 Barry, Jonathan 1956- edt Hester, Marianne 1955- edt Roberts, Gareth 1949- edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-55224-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-63875-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511599538 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
